Disincarnate was a part of the underground death metal movement of the early '90s, led by one of the genre's best-known guitarists - James Murphy. It was through his technically innovatative work on classic albums like Death's Spiritual Healing, Obituary's Cause Of Death, and Cancer's Death Shall Rise that Murphy gained his reputation as one of death metal's primo axemen, it only seemed natural that he form a band of his own. Disincarnate recorded only one album during their existence. "Dreams of the Carrion Kind" released in 1993 on Roadrunner Records was a minor masterwork of the death metal genre. This reissue features liner notes from Murphy and bonus tracks.

Disincarnate: Bryan Cegon (vocals); James Murphy (acousitc guitar, guitar); Jason Carman (guitar); Tommy Viator (drums).
Additional personnel: Aaron Stainthorpe (vocals); James Murphy (bass); John Walker (background vocals); Pete "Pee Wee" Coleman (samples).
Recorded at The Windings, North Wales, England. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye, James Murphy, and Monte Conner.
Disincarnate's only album, Dreams of the Carrion Kind, was ostensibly the much anticipated "solo" showcase for journeyman guitarist James Murphy, whose personal legend had been built, almost entirely, upon a series of brief but highly praised cameos with influential bands Obituary, Death, and Cancer. As much as his capabilities as a principal songwriter and bandleader, however, Dreams became a living document of instrumental overindulgence gone ape, having been released near the zenith of the Floridian death metal scene's technical-cerebral maturity. As such, the album virtually requires that listeners approach it with a student's curiosity for inaccessible sounds and sheer technique, because nothing here is what you'd call "immediate" by any stretch of the definition (so be prepared to take notes while you mosh, kids!). Heck, even all these years later, staple Disincarnate offerings such as "Stench of Paradise Burning," "Beyond the Flesh," "Soul Erosion," and "Deadspawn" (several of them co-written by rhythm guitarist Jason Carman) still shock and awe with their Byzantine architecture and constant riff and tempo changes. Collectively, they may not plumb the same mind-numbing depths of complexity as, say, Suffocation, but amid the daunting cascade of slushy-thick riffs, sledgehammer percussion from Tommy Viator, and spiraling harmonic streaks (captured with stunning effect in the classic "Confine of Shadows"), the only real "hooks" on hand are proffered by Murphy's stunningly accomplished, famously melodic solo flights. The guitarist also contributes mostly invisible bass guitar throughout (quite typical for the style), while frontman Bryan Cegon proves himself a perfectly competent but really rather average death metal vocalist -- both in terms of his run-of-the-mill Cookie Monster growl and lyrics that read like some sort of scary but oddly didactic catalog of the dark side. (On a trivia note: My Dying Bride singer Aaron Stainthorpe appears on the album standout "Monarch of the Sleeping Marches.") All of these intellectual demands -- both scripted and musical -- invariably restrict Disincarnate and Dreams of the Carrion Kind to a pretty specific point in time (and an equally specific fan base), but it just so happens to be state-of-the-art death metal in the eyes of most enthusiasts of the genre. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

5 stars Quite Possibly the Best Death Metal Release Ever
I am a big fan of the early Florida death metal scene. My favorite bands are Death, Obituary, and Morbid Angel. Anyways, I was told about this CD from my guitar teacher. This CD is a great example of technical death metal. It features the brutal technical riffing and melodic solos of guitarist James Murphy. I highly recommend this CD to any fan of the death metal scene.

Principally recorded live in Japan.
Dokken never really had much of an original sound; their hair metal anthems and power ballads were often indistinguishable from other bands of the genre. However, their live album, Beast From the East, proves that they possess something other metal groups fail to achieve when performing live -- power. While such rock groups as Iron ...

Mudvayne boasts a couple of elements that distinguish it from most contemporary heavy metal outfits. The band adopts bizarre facial makeup that is less suggestive of Kiss than of a bunch of boys who, having failed to plan their Halloween costumes, threw something together by raiding their mother's vanity case. And lead singer Kud (they have funny pseudonyms, too) doesn't always sing in a typical hardcore howl, sometimes descending into a more conventional voice, as if he were auditioning to replace Sebastian Bach in the Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde. Such characteristics suggest that, for Mudvayne, the thrash style is something of a pose, a suspicion enhanced by reference to the CD booklet, which contains an acknowledgments section as lengthy and gushy as what you'd find on a teen pop album. Can these guys giving thanks and love to family and friends be the same ones performing aggressive lockstep metal, spewing obscenities, and singing about suicide? It seems so, but it's hard to take seriously. (The "L.D." in the album's title refers to "lethal dose," and the "50" refers to a level of toxicity at which 50 out of 100 test animals will die.) [A 'clean' version of the album was released in 2001 as well.] ~ William Ruhlmann
L.D. 50 is the scientific measurement used to determine the relative lethal dosage of a toxic substance. Thus, it's an entirely appropriate title for the major-label debut of these decidedly toxic troublemakers.
While these heavy rockers churn out gut-wrenching guitar riffs, pounding drumbeats, and snarling vocals aplenty, they're far from humorless. The pulverizing effect of their sonic attack is undeniable, but they're essentially clowns at heart. This is discernible not only in their Kiss-in-the-21st century makeup, but also in the light-hearted sci-fi themes that crop up, as on the 2001-inspired "Monolith." And while Mudvayne charges fiercely ...

Tribe
Queensryche Tribe CD  (2003)

Dreams Of The Carrion Kind
CD $8.65  3.4 stars Audio Samples
Queensryche: Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield.
Tribe is, in so many ways, a make or break album for Queensr˙che. While the Live Evolution set brought home 30 tracks of the R˙che's concert material -- with or without founding guitarist Chris DeGarmo -- the band's studio output since Promised Land (and some would debate the validity of that album) has been inconsistent. For starters, there was the departure of DeGarmo after the disappointing Hear in the Now Frontier, and then the loss of another guitarist after the lackluster Q2k. Certainly there were moments of brilliance on both recordings, but the inspiration and fire that fueled earlier efforts were lurking behind the scenes somewhere. On Tribe, the band reunites with DeGarmo. The original lineup wrote and produced Tribe. Whether or not DeGarmo is returning to the band as a full-on member is not clear as of this writing. Tribe reflects a renewed vigor and vision in the Queensr˙che sound. This is prog metal at its best: knotty song structures, complex melodies, bruising guitars, and Geoff Tate's voice ...

Countdown To Extinction
Megadeth Countdown To Extinction CD  (1992)

Dreams Of The Carrion Kind
CD $10.15  Audio Samples
Megadeth is one of the few metal bands to have successfully handled the transition to the '90s, and Countdown to Extinction is proof positive; although considerably more streamlined and commercially oriented than their previous efforts, it's still a fine album, and arguably one of their best. Lead singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine's lyric-writing has improved, and the results can be heard on 'Countdown to Extinction', 'Symphony of Destruction', 'Architecture of Aggression' (it's a rare songwriter who can make a line like that fit in a chorus), and 'Foreclosure of a Dream'. This is arena metal at its best; Countdown to Extinction (a reference not to genocide, as one might assume, but to endangered species) manages the difficult trick of being commercially appealing and musically ...
