| | Herculaneum Orange Blossom CD Herculaneum Discography of CDs
Orange Blossom is the 12th title in the Document Chicago series, which has been recording the latest generation of the city's illustrious creative music scene for the past four years. Founded in 2002, Herculaneum mixes creative improvisation with diverse influences such as 20th Century avant-garde composition and Romany Gypsy brass bands to create a cohesive yet cosmopolitan new sound. Orange Blossom, the group's follow-up to its eponymous self-released 2004 debut, documents its expanding song structures, instrumentation and breadth of compositional strategies, which range from lush soundscapes to duos and trios of Leone-like abstraction.Musicians: Nick Broste (trombone), Greg Danek (bass), David McDonnell (alto saxophone, clarinet), Patrick Newbery (trumpet), Dylan Ryan (drums, vibraphone, piano) with John Beard (guitar), Andra Kulans (viola)Herculaneum was formed in 2002, and features veteran members of the Chicago jazz, improvised music, and experimental rock communities. The three-horn front line includes trombonist Nick Broste, trumpeter Patrick Newbery, and saxophonist David McDonnell. All three active participants in the Chicago improvised music community, Broste has performed with Jim Baker, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Dave Rempis and recorded with the likes of Archer Prewitt, Chris Mills and has currently, with Newbery, recorded with Wilco and spent time touring with Head of Femur. Equally busy alto saxophonist David McDonnell completes the triumvirate. McDonnell currently plays in the heavy psych duo Michael Columbia with percussionist Dylan Ryan, also of Icy Demons and Orso. Ryan and bassist Greg Danek take the role of rhythm section."What began as an opportunity for drummer-composer Dylan Ryan to explore his love of Beefheartian convulsion has developed into something much more sophisticated and accessible. The band's trombone/trumpet/alto sax front line paints lush chordal sketches remniscent of classical composer Oliver Messiaen and Miles Davis collaborator Gil Evans, while the piano-less rhythm section provides roiling support worthy of John Zorn's Masada." — Ben Taylor, Time Out Chicago"Drummer Dylan Ryan and bassist Greg Danek carve out loose, loping grooves and are flexible enough to turn on a dime or drop in sudden accents...Trombonist Nick Broste and Trumpeter Patrick Newbery (both regular collaborators with Head of Femur) along with saxophonist David McDonnell (who plays with Ryan in the arty electronic duo Michael Columbia), blend precise execution with relaxed phrasing, and thier melodically rich improvisations move freely over the rhythms like they're bouncing on a trampoline." — Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader"...Herculaneum sounds like a jazz-rock horn section that wandered far off the pop music reservation. The ensemble play is agile, with the horns executing tricky passages that veer from 20th century art music to cartoon soundtracks; from bebop to the big top. Yet these sharp stylistic turns never seem merely willful attempts to throw the listener off-balance." — David DuPont, One Final Note Orange Blossom Music | Category | Jazz Albums | | Label | 482 Music | | CD Universe Part number | 7345807 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 06, 2006 |

| | Sean Smith Poise CD (2001)
Orange Blossom music CDs
$20.25 This is the second CD led by brilliant bassist/composer Sean Smith and featuring his long-term working band. Recorded with high-resolution DSD technology, with no production edits or musician headphones, the sound of Poise is warm, clean, and very naturalistic. It showcases 13 of Smith's tuneful, non-derivative originals, rendered by five superb musicians in a variety of formats. For example, guitar and piano alternate as the fourth member of the quartet, Smith's soulful bass leads "A Blues for Donald" with just guitar accompaniment, and the closing "Art Song" is an elegant piano solo. The arrangements are cool, the ballads moody and gorgeous. "Nobody's Hoedown" is full of wry humor, while an old cowboy tune gets a free jazz makeover in "Red Rivers and Valleys/Appendix." Other highlights include the decidedly undepressed "Tropical Depression," the film noir feel of "Hugging the Edges," and the deeply moving "Gratitude in the Minor," with Alan Mezquida's eloquent, primal sax and a beautiful Bill Charlap solo punctuated by a stunning moment when the group seems to hold its collective breath. The delicate mix of Keith Ganz' guitar and Russell Meissner's brushes on "Poise," the horn/bass weave on "Short Ballad," and the flat-out "Wise Guys," with great, whirling solos by all concerned, are also noteworthy. True to its title -- which also means "equilibrium" -- this CD is a balance of contrasts. Both sophisticated and emotional, intricate and uncluttered, it reveals richer artistry with each spin. Highly recommended. ~ Judith Schlesinger
NEW YORK CITY, August 2001 - Sean Smith's beautiful compositions and well seasoned quartet are captured by Sony's new Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording technology on the composer, bassists second solo CD "Poise". "The quartet recorded this CD live all in the same room which has a beautiful, warm, natural sound", said Smith. "It's all captured by the recording. We didn't have to wear headphones and had great sight lines to see one another. These are luxuries in the studio. There is so much air and life in the result for you to hear". This recording ...

| | Katchie Cartwright Soulmates CD (1999)
Orange Blossom album
$16.45 Katchie Cartwright has an attractive voice that she uses quite effectively on this quintet set, often wordlessly. Her interplay with altoist Richard Oppenheim and the excellent rhythm section (pianist James Weidman, bassist Belden Bullock, and drummer Bill Goodwin) results in some touching and even eerie moments. The repertoire mostly alternates originals by Cartwright and Oppenheim (with one from Weidman) that are sometimes based on other songs, such as "The Moon Over His Crazy Rock Garden" (which uses the chords of "Stella by Starlight"). Best is a three-song medley of "Embraceable You"-type tunes, "Dear Mr. Walrus," and "Blue Mi." Cartwright functions as part of the band as opposed to a stand-in-front singer, and the resulting music is quite intriguing and unpredictable. Well worth checking out. ~ Scott Yanow
"Intriguing and unpredictable. Well worth checking out." (4 Stars, AMG pick) - Scott Yanow, AllMusic Guide"Vocalist nonpareil Cartwright and husband, alto-saxophonist Oppenheim not only prove to be soulmates, but simpatico musical partners. She is emerging as one of the most talented jazz singers on the current scene, he has an interesting sound that stretches bop parameters, a sweet and sour style. When they play in unison, as they do frequently, the sonority is unlike any other. Add to this witches' brew the very fine pianist James Weidman, who's done his share of accompanying singers, notably Abbey Lincoln, ox-strong bassist Belden Bullock, and four-decade Phil Woods back-up, drummer Bill Goodwin. They enhance the music and act as a trampoline foundation, supporting Cartwright's catty voice, which sounds as if she plays quick games of checkers, or hopscotch. There's some sultry wordless scat as in the mid-tempo, Weidman-written title track kicker, siren songs ...
