K toz features Kassav"s zouk founding fathers, Georges Decimus and Jacob Desvarieux, plus all the mainstays except Patrick Saint-Eloi. As usual, the production is first rate. The enormous lineup of Antillean and African churn out tremendous torque here nevertheless. There's also plenty of pulverizing percussion and swing for dancers. Kassav' always manages to reconnect with its drumming roots, gwo ka and zouk's precursor, cadence. They also deftly inject touches of creolized European dance rhythms into the pot. The mix of all these styles and many more went into creating the primal zouk wave. Kassav' is the best at reaffirming all these musical currents that go into the fine mix that is zouk par excellence. The different vocalists' timbre always give Kassav' albums varied textures and feelings. This album doesn't take a ballad breather until the ninth track. The founding fathers can still kick it, and kick they do after 25 or so releases. Highly recommended. ~ Mark Romano Kassav K Toz Songs | 1. | San Ayen |

| | Don Ho Greatest Hits CD (1969)
K Toz songs
$6.05 Don Ho's very name has become a veritable punchline. Yet his achievements can not be dismissed as easily as an obvious joke. Few recording artists have been so comfortable in so many genres--Don Ho masterfully handles anything from country to light rock to luau listening. He's almost a Jimmy Buffet from an earlier generation. His version of "Tiny Bubbles" is the standard by which all others are judged. Don Ho is to Honolulu what Wayne Newton is to Vegas.

| | Fabulous Wailers CD (1959)
K Toz album
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. Even more amazing is that the tonal crudity of this recording is enhanced even further on the stereo pressings of this album! ...

| | No Doubt Tragic Kingdom CD (1995)
K Toz music CDs
$11.39 No Doubt was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TRAGIC KINGDOM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Don't Speak" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
No Doubt's members cite a strange variety of musical influences: Kiss, Prince and Madness, to name a few. And it's easy to imagine that their hometown itself, Anaheim, California (home to Disneyland), may have played a part in forming the band's schizophrenic, high-energy sound, which took TRAGIC KINGDOM, the band's second album, on a slow, steady ride up the pop charts. It finally hit No. 1 in December 1996, 14 months after it was released.
This is ska-punk-new wave-dance music, with instrumentation ranging from hardcore guitar to mellow, reggae-style horns. Singer Gwen Stefani's voice is by turns peppy, almost adolescent ("Spiderwebs") and emotionally wailing; she can sound a lot like Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano ("Just A Girl"). When Stefani sings, "I'm just a girl, little ol' me/Don't let me out of your sight," she does so without a hint of girlishness; her voice is all attitude, with a warbling edge of melodrama. For the most part, these are happy songs, though No Doubt do get philosophical on "Different People": "Once in a while I sit back/And think about the planet/Most of the time I trip on it/To kick back and think of how massive it all is/And how many others are on it."
Engineers include: Matt Hyde, Phil Kaffel, George Landress.
Personnel: Gwen Stefani (vocals); Tom Dumont (guitar); Aloke Dasgupta (sitar); Melissa "Missy" Hasin (cello); Bill Bergman (saxophone); Greg Smith (baritone saxophone); Les Lovitt (trumpet); Gabrial McNair (trombone, percussion); Nick Lane ...
