The career of the Police was planned, controlled and timed to perfection. The three talented individuals probably always knew that they would attempt to conquer the world and then disappear to pursue their own musical interests. This is the second of their five albums and contains two number 1 hits. Both are interesting little vignettes from the mind of Sting; 'Walking On The Moon', where he pleads 'I hope my legs don't break', and 'Message In A Bottle', which has a similarly desperate theme, with Sting observing 'seems I'm not alone in being alone, 100 billion castaways looking for a home'. Sting's theories do still hold water.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007.

Streetlight Manifesto's competent, lively ska-punk debut sets jittery, usually very rapid tunes to singer/guitarist Tomas Kalnoky's ultra-fast vocals. (Kalnoky also wrote all of the material and produced the record.) It's much like hearing a hardcore punk singer supported by much cheerier melodies and varied rhythms than most hardcore punk bands could muster. The lyrics, too, aren't too far afield from hardcore, with their breathless narrative thrust and pumped-up vibes of prickly despair, uncertainty, assertion of individual identity against the odds, and fleeting images of violence. In truth, the actual lyrics Kalnoky's singing are, for the above reasons, often no easier to decipher than those heard on many hardcore punk records, though they're much less grating on the ear. And though they're helpfully printed in the sleeve, he's prone to jamming many words into very little time, so that some of them have to be reproduced in such small print that they're difficult to read. Between his 2006 solo debut, The Simple Things, and his latest album My Winter Window, Brent Ratkovich is rapidly gaining prominence in this style of musical expression that has eluded so many before him. With The Simple Things, Ratkovich seems to discover his true voice, which makes the experimentation with his sound – such as adding a violin and his wife on piano in several tracks - on the subsequent album so powerful. In the songs from both albums, the subtle listener can notice the nuances of Ratkovich's musical evolution. But it's never overdone, and such simplicity is one of the driving forces that makes his work notable in its craftsmanship. When you're dealing in gentle melodies and straightforward tonalities, the lyrical content becomes the primary point of emphasis.
