| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Singer & The Song
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Singer & The Song
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Singer & The Song
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and Dave Holland ...
| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
Singer & The Song
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside ...

Singer & The Song
$12.79 From its bizarre cover art to its absurd title to its gleefully chaotic and thematically offensive songs, the Butthole Surfers' 1985 full-length debut, PSYCHIC...POWERLESS...ANOTHER MAN'S SAC, perfectly exemplifies the Texas-spawned ensemble's twisted, ungodly aesthetic. On this wildly unhinged first outing, frontman Gibby Haynes and ...

| | Curse Of Blondie CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Track; Limited Edition; France
Singer & The Song
$19.69 Blondie's first new studio album since 1999's NO EXIT accentuates the finest aspects of their seminal sound. The opening numbers "Shakedown" and "Good Boys," for instance, both mine the group's dance classic "Rapture," the former song finding iconic lead singer Debbie Harry revisiting her NYC rap persona, and the latter highlighting a disco-era beat.
While songs such as the rocking "Undone" show contemporary New York bands such as the Strokes exactly how it's done, the quirkier, more experimental material such as "Magic (Asadoya Yunta)" and "Desire Brings Me Back" ...

| | Philip Catherine Blue Prince/Meeting Colours CDs (2008)
Singer & The Song
$18.09 This excellent twofer brings together a pair of albums by the Belgian jazz guitarist Philip Catherine. BLUE PRINCE finds Catherine leaning more toward the fusion that characterized his early work, though the material (mostly Catherine originals) also shows strong elements of traditional bop. The supporting musicians are fine, especially the solo work from trumpeter Bert Joris. On MEETING COLORS Catherine is joined by a full orchestra, but jazz purists and string-a-phobes needn't fear. MEETING COLORS traffics in big band swing mode with plenty of cool bop overtones with plenty of space for Catherine's fleet-fingered tricks. Both are excellent examples of the man's artistry.
