| | Derek Trucks Songlines CD (2006)
Funkifino CD music
$11.39 This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. The Derek Trucks Band, as evidenced by the release of 2003's Soul Serenade, is a unit -- a band -- whose core has been together for eight years. They create an atmosphere, a sound, a musical sense of place and community. On Live at the Georgia Theater (available only on the Internet), the DTB performed with new vocalist Mike Mattison, who gave them something they needed: a strong, utilitarian presence that could be as diverse and adventurous as the band was musically. This album's title, Songlines, was inspired ...
| | Joe Bonamassa You & Me CD (2006)
Funkifino music CDs
$13.85 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things settle down and get more rootsy ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Funkifino CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, ...

| | Caravan All Over You...Too CD (2000)
Funkifino album
$10.59 This is the second volume that the '90s reformation of Caravan has issued containing overhauled renditions of their most beloved material. As with the incipient volume All Over You, enthusiasts and purists alike will inevitably have differing opinions on their favorite music being presented in a sonically modern context. Fortunately, these tracks are rendered more often successfully than not. In contrast to the personnel on All Over You, this release features the '90s touring ensemble, adding noted sidemen Doug Boyle on lead guitar and bassist/vocalist Jim Leverton. Boyle's credentials include a high profile stint with Robert Plant's mid- to late-'80s solo band. Leverton has performed in seminal incarnations of Juicy Lucy, Fat Mattress, and Savoy Brown. Both display a tremendous grasp of Caravan's often quirky arrangements and peculiar performance styles. ...
