The Chicago jazz vocalist Kurt Elling shows his musical depth in this after-hours set, which features inspired re-workings of songs by a varied selection of artists, including Frank Sinatra, Irving Berlin, Betty Carter, and the Guess Who. In a further display of his wide-ranging artistry, Elling also performs musical settings of poems by Walt Whitman and Theodore Roethke, as well as adding his own lyrics to a version of "Body and Soul," and pairing lines by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi with a little-known Duke Ellington composition, "I Like the Sunrise."
Personnel: Kurt Elling (vocals).
Down Beat (p.56) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e's a risk taker, one of the few post-Baby Boom hardcore jazz artists who can live up to the term 'original.'" JazzTimes (p.91) - "[T]he sort of once-in-a-rare-moon creative explosion that happens when brains, guts and curiosity intersect." Nightmoves album
$13.45 MAN IN THE AIR was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
One of the most distinctive, forward-looking vocalists in contemporary jazz, Kurt Elling is clearly inspired by the likes of Jon Hendricks and Mark Murphy, but assimilates those influences into a strikingly unique style. Though he's done his share of standards as well as albums of original material, Elling ...

| | Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD (2007)
Nightmoves songs
$13.49 McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, well-known and revered over the years. Lovano sounds, eerily enough, like Pharoah Sanders, employing a slightly staggered expansive vibrato on "Walk Spirit, ...

Perhaps taking a page from Karrin Allyson's note-perfect tribute to John Coltrane's BALLADS, the contemporary jazz singer Kurt Elling offers his own live tribute to the classic Impulse LP JOHN COLTRANE & JOHNNY HARTMAN, the tenor icon's 1963 collaboration ...
| | Raz Mesinai Before The Law CD (2001)
Nightmoves music CDs
$14.69 Using Franz Kafka's writings as an inspirational and thematic backdrop, composer and electronica pioneer Raz Mesinai has created a virtually indescribable wonder of an album. Here, Mesinai, who is a painstaking composer -- particularly for strings and percussion -- employs Mark Feldman, Jaqueline Leclair, Michael Moser, Ralph Farris, Ann de Villiers, and Erich Schoen-Rene to record his pieces with nuance, subtlety, and grace. Mesinai also plays percussion on many of them, then ...

| | Great Johnny Adams R&B Album CD (2006)
Nightmoves CD music
$9.59 They didn't call the late Johnny Adams "the Tan Canary" for nothing -- the man had one of the finest and most graceful voices in soul music, and unlike many R&B artists who earned some early success and cruised at half-speed into a latter-day career on a roots-friendly indie label, Adams' voice and his instincts about what to do with it actually improved with the passage of time. Between 1984 and 1998, Adams cut nine albums for Rounder Records, and you could compile several very listenable compilations from his output for the label -- which is what Rounder has done, in a sense, as they've put together two CDs from his work for the label, one devoted to blues-oriented material ...
