Formed in the mid 1970s by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, the Blackbyrds ventured far into soul/funk territory much like the contemporaneous work of Herbie Hancock and George Duke. With groove as its guide, the Washington, D.C.-based ensemble even garnered a few minor pop hits, most notably the dance-oriented title track and the light, breezy single "Walking in Rhythm," both of which are featured on this well-compiled collection.
Compiled from their half dozen top-selling albums, "Happy Music" is full of the most danceable, party-hearty, spirited grooves found anywhere. For the club, the car, the crib, or wherever, it is truly sophisticated music with a truly contemporary feel. This is mainly due to the fact that these cats could really play, everything from Jazz-Fusion to straight Funk to Soul to Smooth Jazz to Urban Adult Contemporary to Pop. They were as effervescent, energetic, and tight as any band out there. Happy Music is a 14 track career spanning overview of the two-time Grammy Nominated jazz supergroup and includes the never before released bonus track “Feel Like A Kid”. The Blackbyrds (formed in 1974, disbanded 1980) were the creation of one Dr. Donald Byrd, noted Jazz trumpeter in the Blue Note Records stable for many years and a distinguished protege of Clifford Brown.

The Magic of the Blue is above all a celebration of the human voice in all its myriad forms of expression. Whether transcending contrived ballads like "Three-Ring Circus" (a bland rewrite of the earlier hit "Sideshow") or soaring on the strength of up-tempo dance tunes like the excellent title cut, Blue Magic's harmonies are impeccable, showcased by arranger

Eddie South was a talented jazz violinist who never really achieved the fame that he deserved; though he was a contemporary of Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith, most of his work was for radio and films. As a result, relatively few of his recordings have appeared on CD. So the discovery of 16 of his earliest radio transcription programs, all sponsored by a women's beauty product called Cheloni-Skin, is an important find. They are collected in their entirety on this three-CD compilation, complete with unidentified announcers (and commercials if there is a music bed by South). While the performances ranges from easy listening to Latin pop themes of the era, tangos, gypsy swing, novelty numbers and downright corn, ...
