Los Impossibles
$39.95 After releasing a collection of Snoop outtakes plus their "Re-Lit" version of Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the WIDEawake Entertainment group continued their unleashing of Death Row Records vault with their most ambitious project yet. The Ultimate Death Row Collection kicks off with a disc full of hits from the infamous West Coast label's heyday. With "Gin & Juice" (Snoop Dogg), "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang" (Dr. Dre), "I Ain't Mad at Cha" (2Pac), "Regulate" (Warren G.), and a slew of others, it's a whirlwind of vital G-Funk hits and West Coast classics that finishes on a high note, the fan favorite "Afro Puffs" (Lady of Rage). Disc two and three are where things get interesting, as a series of unreleased and rare tracks present an alternative-reality version of Death Row. From the LBC Crew's ominous "Six Shooter" to Soopafly's underappreciated party cut "This Type of Flow," the collection makes the Row seem much more active and diverse than most will remember. Add to that undiscovered gems like Kurupt throwing some beef Too Short's way ("Everybody Needs to Slow Down") Danny Boy delivering a prime G-Funk ballad ( "Rock, Roll, & Bounce"), and Petey Pablo in Death Row mode ("Spit Game"), and there's plenty here for West Coast fans to savor. One wishes the liner notes were beefier or that all the "Producer Unknown" credits were resolved, though, and putting classic tracks like 2Pac's "All Eyez on Me" amongst the rarities makes this collection seem confused. Still, these are minor complaints, and when a collection shifts the mystery from "what did it all sound like?" to "why weren't these great tracks big hits?", it's an easy recommendation. ~ David Jeffries

Los Impossibles
$15.65 Boyce & Hart claim a secret piece of rock history in that their band, the Candy Store Prophets, were the ghost band for the Monkees (before the Monkees began playing their own instruments). Boyce & Hart also wrote plenty of their own hooky pop, as I WONDER WHAT SHE'S DOING TONIGHT, a best-of set, reveals. 24 tracks of pleasurable 1960'-tinged pleasure-pop that should satisfy anyone interested in the genre.
Rev-Ola's Bobby Hart and Tommy Boyce retrospective shines a light on the men behind the Monkees with 24 tracks and 24 pages of exhaustive liner notes and photos. I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite: The Best of Boyce & Hart may not include any of the hits that they penned -- or played, for that matter -- for the Monkees like "Last Train to Clarksville," "Valleri" and "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone," but devout fans of bubblegum and AM pop will bow before sugary confections such as "Goodbye Baby (I Don't Want to See You Cry)," "Pretty Flower" and the Herman's Hermits-inspired title cut. ~ James Christopher Monger
Bobby Hart and Tommy Boyce were popmeisters who wrote songs for the early Phil Spector productions among many others, but perhaps their best known project was The Monkees! .Turned down for roles early in the auditions, they landed the perhaps more artistically satisfying and lucrative roles as writer/producers for the music content of the show. Indeed, it was their own band, The Candy Store Prophets, who ghosted for The Monkees on their early sessions, including all the early hits and successful album tracks.
