| | Tony DeSare Last First Kiss CD Tony DeSare Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Last First Kiss builds nicely upon vocalist/pianist Tony DeSare's superb 2005 debut album, Want You. A charming presence on the microphone with classic silver-screen good looks and a singer/songwriter's soul, DeSare not only updates such classic American popular song standards here as "Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You" and "How Deep Is the Ocean?," but also reinterprets such modern-day hits as "Kiss," turning Prince's iconic funk track into a slowed-down organ-driven shuffle. Similarly invigorating, DeSare dims the lights on Carole King's usually upbeat "I Feel the Earth Move" and delivers instead a brooding, Miles Davis-influenced afterglow version. It's just this kind of postmodern niftiness that stops Last First Kiss from being yet another solid yet predictable neo-crooner outing and turns it into a truly surprising listen. Also a pleasant surprise is DeSare's own songwriting, and here he showcases his knack for both classic jazz standard-influenced songcraft, as on the poignant "I'll Never Have Enough of You," as well as more contemporary rock-influenced writing, as evidenced by the sweetly melodic and bittersweet title track. Of course, at his core DeSare is a supremely gifted interpreter of jazz standards, and his softly melodic, straight-ahead take on "There Will Never Be Another You" mainlines heartbreak to your soul. Throw in a stellar backing ensemble, including bassist and co-writer Mike Lee, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and Last First Kiss enters the race as an early contender for one of the best releases of 2007. ~ Matt Collar
Personnel: Tony DeSare (vocals, piano); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Harry Allen, Bob Malach (tenor saxophone); Glenn Drewes (trumpet); Keith O'Quinn (trombone); Tedd Firth (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Mike Lee (bass instrument); Brian Czach (drums).
Down Beat (p.60) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n intimate affair....DeSare doesn't need to rely on other songwriters to get his message across." JazzTimes (p.82) - "DeSare's jaunty 'They Can't Take That Away From Me is distinctly Sinatra-esque and his stripped-bare 'How Deep Is the Ocean' is stunning in its heartfelt honesty." | Last First Kiss Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) How about 6 stars? This is the one guy who could walk right up to the Sinatra throne and take the seat! He writes, he arranges, he plays a mean piano, he sings like every song was made for him. He's still a young man and if he continues to mature, he'll be unstoppable. Doesn't hurt that he is amazingly handsome, too. Submitted by bilkef (Las Vegas, Nevada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
sweet encounter I enjoy this music on laid back days, rainy days and days I just want to move and think at a slower pace. His voice is sweet and soothing and the choice of songs fun and pleasing. Submitted by leedenham (Chattanooga, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Better than the first Tony DeSare has certainly entered the ring with all the crooner competition, on his new CD "Last First Kiss"... This work of art brings him head and shoulders above the rest of the field..
His song choices for this album are right on... With four originals that showcase his songwriting as well as that smooth as velvet voice... Top it all off with an unexpected jazz shuffle of Prince's eighties hit "Kiss"
that puts a totally new face on a pop standard, which until now I thought belonged only to Prince... This a CD that you can listen to over and over and not tire of it.. Treat yourself to some great music and watch this guy go...This has got to be one of the best
albums of the year.. Submitted by Jazz (Albany, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Tony DeSare Want You CD (2005)
Last First Kiss CD music
$15.65 Singing jazz pianists haven't always gotten a fair shake from critics, but Tony DeSare's CD debut for Telarc demonstrates a potential to win them over while also appealing to a wider audience. Backed by a swinging band that includes veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, DeSare's warm vocals are complemented by his piano chops in the brisk workout of "Just in Time." It is also refreshing to hear a performer mine overlooked gems like Cy Coleman's "Baby Dream Your Dream," "We've Got a World That Swings," and a campy striding instrumental arrangement of the oldie "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue," in which Pizzarelli and bassist Mike Lee give the leader a run for his money with their respective solos. But the best surprise is the quality of DeSare's originals (most of which were jointly written with Lee). Jazz vocalists are always looking for new material despite the dearth of compelling songs emerging from modern Broadway musicals and the world of pop. DeSare offers up warm, swinging ballads like the appealing "Want You" (which adds John Swana's delicious muted trumpet) and the ...

Last First Kiss songs
$8.99 Naturally, there is a healthy dose of old school jazz and swing here, with treatments of "Hello Dolly" and "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey?" that do their best to conjure the ghost of Louis Armstrong strolling down Decatur. Connick does spry, spirited versions of the Allen Toussaint classics "Working in a Coal Mine" and "Yes We Can," keeping the feel brash and funky, while his originals (which are explicitly about New Orleans) blend surprisingly well ...
| | Jane Monheit Surrender CD (2007)
Last First Kiss album
$10.75 At once crisply assertive and lovingly sensual, vocalist Jane Monheit is the jazz equivalent of the young and charming grade school teacher you secretly nurtured a crush on. A sophisticated bombshell of a performer with a voice that is, like her appearance, voluptuous and flawlessly pretty, Monheit has garnered well-earned comparisons to such icons as Ella Fitzgerald and the goddess of vocal pop, Barbra Streisand. In that sense, her sixth studio album, Surrender, is, at first glance, not dissimilar from her past work. Recorded with her working combo including husband and drummer Rick Montalbano, Surrender is a ballads-heavy album that features a mix of jazz standards, reworked pop tunes, and several bossa nova numbers. What is different is the focus and presentation of Monheit. Rather than featuring her here simply as a singer fronting a jazz band, Surrender is a cinematic showcase, a Broadway-sized coming-out ...
