| | Soft Mountain CD - Import Soft Mountain Discography of CDs
As the both the name and title of this release indicate, Soft Mountain were intimately connected with Soft Machine, albeit long after the latter group had dissolved in the '70s. In August 2003, ex-Soft Machiners Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper teamed up with two Japanese musicians, keyboardist Hoppy Kamiyama and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, to record the hour of improvised fusion that comprises this album. And it certainly is improvisation; there's just one "song" here, "Soft Mountain Suite," divided into two parts of roughly half-an-hour length each. Though improvised in the studio, the music itself won't be too surprising to longtime Soft Machine followers, being energetic, instrumental jazz-rock fusion that's more jazz than rock, blending a frenetic rhythm section with free jazz sax and electric keyboard textures. Things do get especially wild halfway through the second part of the suite, with some careening electronic effects (presumably created by the keyboardist) and wild blowing by Dean, who died just a couple years or so after this session. It's more an extension of what Soft Machine were known for than a radical departure, though as Hopper notes in his brief liner note, he and Dean welcomed the chance to be spontaneous as the group they were touring Japan with at the time (Soft Works) played a set that didn't vary much from gig to gig. ~ Richie Unterberger
Legendary Soft Machine veterans Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper joined forces in 2003 with wildly creative keyboardist/composer Hoppy Kamiyama and master drummer, Yoshida Tatsuya to create Soft Mountain. Their debut recording is now released here for the first time. Tatsuya Yoshida was without doubt one of the most important drummers on the Japanese scene in the final decades of the 20th century, having spearheaded at least half a dozen of that country's most important groups, including Acid Mothers Temple & The Ruins. This limited edition digi-pack features a liner note from Hugh Hopper.

| | Paul Motian I Have The Room Above Her CD (2005)
Soft Mountain CD music
$14.15 To put drummer Paul Motian, guitarist Bill Frisell, and saxophonist Joe Lovano in a room together is to court majesty and genius; even if the three were playing hackneyed standards half-asleep, the results would likely be brilliant. I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER is filled with the kind of technical mastery and scintillating chemistry one would expect from a trio this accomplished and advanced. Frisell's electric guitar spins choral color and spiraling, reverbed embellishments. Lovano's tenor is full-toned, and he plays with tremendous sensitivity and nuance, often holding down the melodic center while Frisell and Motian create rhythmic and harmonic frames.
The delicate imbrication of parts lends these compositions the feel of fragile, shifting houses ...
| | Matching Mole On The Radio CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Soft Mountain music CDs
$17.55 Though they were together for a shade less than a year, Matching Mole certainly managed to put a lot of music down on tape during their brief existence. Not only did they do two studio albums, but there were also a few live recordings made; in fact, with the release of this collection of BBC sessions, the amount of live material available by the band now exceeds their studio output. Though five of the tracks from one of the sessions included on this CD (from July 27, 1972) were issued in the mid-'90s on BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert, this release also includes material from three additional 1972 sessions, adding up to a good value with 78 minutes in all. The sound quality is very good, even on the tracks described in the notes as "off-air" recordings, on an assortment of songs, most of which were also represented on their pair of studio LPs. There are also some numbers that didn't find their way onto those albums, notably "Lithing and Gracing" (here heard in two versions) and Kevin Ayers' "No 'Alf Measures," a whimsically jazzy highlight of this collection. If you have other Matching Mole live or studio releases, you'll know what to expect: cerebral jazz-rock fusion, not far from what drummer Robert Wyatt's just-ex-group Soft Machine were doing in the early '70s, with little in the way of conventional rock songs (and virtually ...

| | David Torn Prezens CD (2007)
Soft Mountain album
$15.05 Prezens is the first recording guitarist and producer David Torn has recorded under his own name for ECM Records in the 21 years since his Cloud About Mercury was issued. His sonic explorations have always been at least as much an interest to him as his playing. As a result he has stretched to the limits of what the guitar can, or even perhaps should, do in realms where it sounded like he was playing anything but his chosen instrument. Most recently, Torn has performed in Tim Berne's Science Friction and Hard Cell ensembles and played with Drew Gress and Dave Douglas. Torn enlists Berne and the other members of his Science Friction band: keyboard wizard Craig Taborn and drummer Tom Rainey, minus guitarist Marc Ducret. The end result, while wildly adventurous and full of astonishing improvisations, is also full of some of Torn's most "inside" playing. The opener "AK" begins with a Frippertronics phrase hypnotically asserted by use of a digital delay before giving way to a mutational Delta blues riff, repeated endlessly before opening up to a kind of muted question mark phrase. Rainey's cymbals enter along with an extended line by Berne while Taborn digs into the B-3 with the guitar riff playing under the mix as a guide; the band takes off, exploring the edges of the open chord, never leaving its rhythmic pulse behind for long. Taborn's soloing is deep in the pocket, reminiscent ...
