George Jones / Porter Wagoner CD music
$35.85 Based on Ellis Peter's CADFAEL series of novels, this popular television series (which airs as part of PBS' MYSTERY! lineup in the US) stars Derek Jacobi as the eponymous clergyman. It follows Cadfael, a monk who, in his youth, was a crusader, sailor, and adventurer, but who has now settled down at Shrewsbury Abbey as its resident gardener, botanist, and herbalist. However, from time to time, there are mysteries to be solved around the Abbey, forcing Cadfael to put his startling sleuthing skills into use. Included here are all three episodes from the second season of the series: THE DEVIL'S NOVICE, THE VIRGIN IN THE ICE, and ST. PETER'S FAIR.
Derek Jacobi is Brother Cadfael, the sleuthing monk with an ...

| | Jim Campilongo Table For One CD (1998)
George Jones / Porter Wagoner songs
$12.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
On Table for One, Jim Campilongo forgoes the more overt country touches found on the instrumental only recordings done with his band the Ten Gallon Cats and focuses on the low-key, jazz tinged numbers in which the band would occasionally indulge. Songs like "Ewaltz" and "The Grass Is Greener" reflect more the influence of Bill Frissell than Jimmy Bryant. This is due both to Campilongo's own spacious arrangements and subtle guitar work as well as the absence of the fine pedal steel playing of Cats' regular Joe Goldmark -- he's featured here only on "D'Boat." Amidst the low key surroundings, though, Campilongo still manages to run the gamut stylistically without making the album sound like a careless pastiche. On "The Grass Is Greener" his playing organically shifts from atmospheric country chords to a solo that seamlessly alternates between tough blues licks and fluid jazz notes. Throughout the album Campilongo gets great support from bassist and Cats' member Chris Kee as well as new drummer Jason Lewis and accordion player and keyboardist Rob Burger from Oranj Symphonette and Tin Hat Trio fame. Burger in particular contributes fine solos including his Jimmy Smith-inspired, Hammond B3 work on "Feisty's Ride" and a cabaret style accordion exploration on "Strange Face." With the thoughtful title track and a smoldering version of Billy Sherrill's "Too Far Gone" rounding out the set, Table for One ends up being a fine showcase of not only Campilongo's considerable writing talents, but his accomplished, multidimensional guitar playing as well. ~ Stephen Cook

| | Ladybirds Regional Community Theater CD (2007)
George Jones / Porter Wagoner CD music
$11.19 A duo to make your teeth ache with delight, Ladybirds is the brainchild of Gym Class Heroes keyboardist Tyler Pursel and singer Teeter Sperber, bolstered by a quartet of guesting vocalists. If cupcakes made music, it would probably sound like Regional Community Theater, fluffy and airy with plenty of sugary icing on top, this is toy town electro-pop, the music a bubbling mix between a kiddie keyboard and a teen's Nintendo, with a bowl of popcorn covered with a whole lot of cheese thrown in for good measure. Think Aqua on a sugar high. Something so sweet should go down a treat with the tweenie crowd and mini mall rats, but the Ladybirds expand their appeal to an older audience with a sweet tooth as well as via their clever lyrics and adult themes.
Many of the songs revolve around relationships, be it the close friendship featured on "Slice Our Hands (We Are Blood Sisters)," the obvious choice for a sure hit single, to the fractured relationship of "Maxim and the Headphone Life." The evocative titles -- personal favorite "Oh No! The Unicorns Are Knife Fighting Again" -- often hide the unhappiness at the core of many of the songs, but so upbeat is the music, that inevitably the characters have no choice but to make peace, amends, or go quietly on their way. Cultural pop references, wry twisting of everyday colloquialisms, the turning inside out of common words and phrases, like the best cartoons, the Ladybirds work on two levels, ...
