Voice Within album
$12.79 Though they never quite hit the same musical highs as E.L.P., Yes, or King Crimson, this German prog rock outfit garnered a huge following among those in the know. Includes the previously unissued bonus cut "Showstopper."
Spartacus may not be as progressively strong as 1973's Illusion on a Double Dimple album, but it still stands as this German outfit's second best release. Based on the famous Roman gladiator who led the rebellion against his homeland, the music supports the album's concept quite solidly, with the better tracks coming in the form of the sporadic "School of Instant Pain" and the nine- minute "March to the Eternal City," which gathers a menacing conglomeration of bass guitar riffs and pointed keyboard work. The music becomes effectively motivational toward the concept at the proper times, enabling the band's idea to remain fresh and colorful as the music is played out. Jurgen Fritz's Hammond organ and Moog intervention gives Spartacus a genuine progressive air, culminating as it should on the final track. Although Triumvirat's staunch, stern ...
| | Gabor Szabo High Contrast CD (1970) Remastered; Digipak
Voice Within CD music
$8.79 An unusually successful pairing of Gabor Szabo with R&B legend Bobby Womack. Szabo digs deep into a soulful groove, inspired by Womack's silky-smooth originals. High Contrast features "Breezin," the Womack tune written especially for Szabo, which George Benson parlayed into a huge hit in 1976, and several tunes Womack popularized in the film Across 110th Street. ~ Douglas Payne

| | Terence Blanchard Flow CD (2005)
Voice Within music CDs
$11.69 On Terence Blanchard's FLOW, the hard-bop trumpeter steps outside his usual milieu to explore long-form composition. Divided into three sections entitled "Flow Part I," "Flow Part II, and "Flow Part III," this album focuses more on Blanchard's compositional skill than his improvisational prowess. This is not to say that FLOW is strict or rigid. Like the title implies, each track on this album is relaxed and fluid. Moreover, there is great musical interplay between Blanchard, drummer Kendrick Scott, and the always creative guitarist Lionel Loueke.
FLOW begins with the quasi-reggae "Flow, Part I," and is followed by "Wadagbe (Intro)," a showcase for Loueke's abstract guitar musings and vocal effects. Eventually, this music falls into a Freddie Hubbard-like modal style with movements such as "Benny's Tune" and "Child's Play." However, Blanchard and company never remain in any one genre for too long. For example, FLOW finishes with "Harvesting Dance," a tune that blends a funky ...
| | Steve Davis Update CD (2006) (Import) Netherlands
Voice Within songs
$16.39 By necessity, jazz trombonists tend to be inspired by music of the early jazz and swing eras, because the instrument lost favor around the time bop became ascendant and all young jazz fans wanted to become either Charlie Parker or Miles Davis. Massachusetts-born, New York-based trombonist Steve Davis bucks that trend, however: he's a post-bop player all the way, down to covering Jackie McLean's Parker tribute, "Bird Lives." (Guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove contributes an outstanding, fluid solo on this track as well.) Update is a small-combo date featuring Davis and Hargrove in front of a four-piece rhythm section, with a song selection featuring two by Wayne Shorter, a lovely rendition of Billy Strayhorn's underappreciated gem "Daydream," and a cool, Miles-like take on Ray Drummond's little-known composition "Leanin' and Preenin'" that shows ...

| | Charles Tolliver Big Band With Love CD (2007)
Voice Within CD music
$12.49 Trumpeter Charles Tolliver avoids the usual trap of retro-centric nostalgia inherent to big band settings on this lively 2007 outing. Tolliver's ensemble, which includes members of his fine 1970s outfit Music Inc. Orchestra, unleashes a somewhat raw and ragged energy, and WITH LOVE is all the better for it.
The 16-piece ensemble roars through six Tolliver originals and a Thelonious Monk cover ("'Round Midnight") with a bright, audacious confidence. Tolliver's arrangements make the most of the group's potential for tension, color, and dynamics, and there are plenty of outstanding solos from the musicians on both the modal numbers and the more traditionally melodic pieces.

| | Gary Brunotte Yesterday's Dream CD (1992)
Voice Within music CDs
$11.35 The most interesting aspect to this fine straightahead set (which occasionally utilizes Latin rhythms) is that it gives Eric Marienthal (best-known for his association with Chick Corea's Elektric Band) a very rare opportunity to shot off his bop chops. Altoist Marienthal is equally effective on soprano and flute during the two standards and nine Brunotte originals. Brunotte keeps up with Marienthal, his keyboard work is colorful and singer Lucia Newell is fine on two selections. This small-label release is worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow
