This film is an exploration into the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one another - and eventually find themselves - when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a made collision of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. Sook-Yin Lee, Paul Dawson, Lindsay Beamish, PJ DeBoy, Raphael Barker, Jay Brannan, Peter Stickles, and Justin Bond star. Extras include theatrical trailer, featuette, deleted scenes with filmmaker & cast commentary, trailer gallery, more. Writer/director John Cameron Mitchell follows up the cult classic HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH with another salacious slice of sex-laden cinema. Mitchell interweaves three separate tales of highly sexed and sexually frustrated New Yorkers, all of whom find some kind of salvation at an underground club named Shortbus. Anything goes at Shortbus--wild orgies between people from different ages, backgrounds, and sexual preferences are treated as commonplace, and most of the sex scenes shot through Mitchell's voyeuristic lens are completely unsimulated. Mitchell allows little time for his audience to pause for breath, opening SHORTBUS with a frantic collage of copulation and carnality that features most of his central characters. These include Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist who has never reached full orgasm; gay couple James (Paul Dawson)--who begins the movie by fellating himself--and Jamie (PJ DeBoy); and Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a dominatrix who finds herself unable to find true love.
Mitchell lets his cast of characters unravel their tales of woe, interspersing the touching and mostly sad stories with eye-popping scenes from Shortbus and swooping birds-eye shots of a computer simulated version of New York City. The director also draws heavily on an indie-rock soundtrack, making repeated and effective use of the beautiful "Winters Love" by Brooklyn-based group Animal Collective. But it's the sex scenes that will really get tongues wagging, and its testament to Mitchell's fearless and uncompromising vision that he depicts sexual acts that run the full coital gamut, from amusing to titillating to shocking. Amid all the boundary-pushing there is a tender heart buried in SHORTBUS's central narrative--which revolves around the search for identity and acceptance--but less sensitive viewers who seek amusement in the singing of the National Anthem into a prominent orifice will also find plenty to enjoy here. Theatrical Release: October 6 2006 Shortbus Reviews: 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] warm and optimistic film....The enthusiastic cast of first-timers provide a seductive picture of post 9/11 New York..."-- John Mulvey, Uncut 3 stars out of 5 -- "Mitchell, despite appearances, is more interested in what makes his characters tick rather than their physical peccadilloes."
-- Richard Mowe, Box Office "[Mitchell] finds the battle between lust and intimacy. Funny, touching and vital."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone 3 stars out of 4 -- "Mitchell's energy and occasional ingenuity make SHORTBUS an engaging experience..."-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere "SHORTBUS is chipper, it's fresh, it emits a distinct musk of controversy."-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "Mr. Mitchell finds his happy ending in raucous music and warm caresses, in an oceanic feeling in which everyone is free to be freakily you and me. His idealism is pleasingly touching..."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]f there is such a thing as hard-core with a soft-heart, this is it."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "SHORTBUS is at its best when it's being funny, especially in scenes in the club..."-- Vicky Wilson, Sight and Sound 4 stars out of 5 -- "The most curiously heartwarming movie you'll see this, or any other, year."-- Jamie Graham, Total Film 4 stars out of 5 -- "SHORTBUS is fun, optimistic and observant. Hardcore was never so softhearted."-- Hannah McGill, Uncut

Shortbus Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Gay - Straight, highly erotic This is a movie well worth owning. Wether gay or straight, it is highly erotic with an excelent story line. Submitted by jerryg3 (Worcester, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
how to fall asleep quickly this film is awful. ms.lee seems to be in a fog throughout. her sex scenes are about as convincing as poorly done porn. she displays zero acting ability. ms.carson although having substantial acting training does not get the opportunity to display whatever talent she may have as she is cast as little more than a sextra. Appalled, yet Inspired! I thought this film was one of the most amazing films. At first, I was gasping at the raw footage, but by the end of the film I felt like I was trully part of the film. It was so natural, wonderful, and brilliantly put together. Bravo!!

$7.09 Set in the Spring of 1968; Produced and Released in 2003/2004.
Bernardo Bertolucci's THE DREAMERS centers on three university students who adore the Cinematheque Francaise, and are fascinated by '60s culture--the music of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, the films of Jean-Luc Godard, and the writings of Susan Sontag and Chairman Mao. Their philosophical conversations about sexuality, love, politics, activism, and the Vietnam War; and their daily activities--going to the cinema, protesting in support of Henri Langlois, lounging around naked, and smoking dope--are a realistic reflection of the mood and energy of that era.
The plot involves Parisians Theo (Louis Garrel) and Isa (Eva Green), a brother-sister team with a strangely intimate connection. They befriend their American classmate Matthew (Michael Pitt), and invite him to stay at their apartment for a month while their parents are on vacation. The trio is so engrossed by their film studies that they act out scenes in an ongoing game of trivia, referencing classics like Sam Fuller's SHOCK CORRIDOR, Godard's BANDE A PART, and Frank Tashlin's THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT. They challenge each other through mind games, deeply personal ...

$10.55 Vincent Gallo shocked the 2003 Cannes Film Festival with this highly personal film that he wrote, directed, produced, edited, photographed, and stars in. Gallo plays Bud Clay, a motorcycle racer on his way from New Hampshire to California in a van. The cross-country trip includes stops at a gas station, where Clay meets and falls for a gas station attendant named Violet (Anna Vareschi); a roadside food stand, where he meets the sadly beautiful Lilly (Cheryl Tiegs, making her feature-film debut); and the Las Vegas strip, where he picks up local prostitute Rose (Elizabeth Blake). As he comes into contact with these women, he can't let go of his past, which centers around Daisy (Chloe Sevigny), whom he hopes to find when he returns home to Los Angeles.
Nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, THE BROWN BUNNY is a poignant, emotional drama that features long scenes with little or no dialogue, as Gallo uses natural sound and lighting, jazz and folk music, and long, lingering shots of the open road, raindrops on a windshield, and the scraggly-haired protagonist to create a nearly suffocating atmosphere of loss and loneliness. Winner of the FIPRESCI prize at the 2003 Viennale "for its bold exploration of yearning and grief and for its radical ...

$16.89 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt and Lisa are intimate and realistic (be warned--the sex in the film is real and graphic), conveying everything one needs to know about their relationship with only the most rudimentary dialogue. With this brief, dreamlike work, director Michael Winterbottom (24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE) has theoretically created the ultimate music movie--one that is purely sex, drugs, and rock & roll. The result is akin to the feeling of listening to a great mix tape made by a former lover.
Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall - London's Brixton Academy. ...
