Julius Caesar Movie Review Not the best version around Not one for the sword and sandal lover - follows the Shakespearian format but, unfortunately Jason Robarts and a few other American actors fail to convince as Roman dignitaries. Altogether too much effort on Gielgood type acting and not much in way of entertainment - may be of use in school tutorials but the book would be better for this in any event Submitted by ian.thomas (England, United Kingdom) Was This Review Helpful? Terrible transfer-l This DVD was absolutely the WORST quality that I have ever seen. Muted colors, barely audiblesound. It appeared to be like one of those cheap bootlegs that you buy in th street.
Do not buy this title until a legitimate company offers a quality copy.

Second-string Caesar A largely American cast does a credible job of bringing Julius Caesar to life and death, but acting and directorial misconceptions prevent complete success.
John Gielgud makes a strong title character, but the heart of Shakespeare's play are two very different schemers, the conflicted Brutus and the vengeful Antony.
It's interesting to see Charlton Heston's face on the box, as well as listed here as the star, because that's how director Stuart Burge sees this play. He presents Marc Antony as full-on leading man hero. Heston's typical bombast suits that idea fine without bringing anything new to the part.
Meanwhile, Jason Robards offers a Brutus who is so low-key that he's hardly even there. The imbalance between these two roles makes hash of Shakespeare's nuanced view of how both power and ideals can lead to corruption and unfortunate outcomes.
The Joseph Mankiewicz production, with Marlon Brando, Gielgud and James Mason offers far superior performances. If you can find it, rent it.
In defense of this version, though, it's in color, the action is well paced and far less stagey.
The supporting cast also is workmanlike, although Richard Chamberlain, who at least looks good, said he walked out of a screening in boredom.
Certainly Robert Vaughn deserves attention as a suitably simmering Casca. He doesn't have many lines, but Vaughn casts a long, dark shadow.
Richard Johnson makes a serviceable Cassius, although Robards gives him little help.
British actress Diana Rigg delivers her lines well, and in meter. But Rigg is so under-developed that she looks more like Robards' barely adolescent daughter than his wife.
Despite such shortcomings, this makes a fairly painless introduction to Shakespeare for teens. The production quality of the US tape is very poor, though, so teachers should search for the somewhat better DVD. Submitted by Joe (Bucks County) Was This Review Helpful? $11.49 This three-CD set issued by Universal in the Netherlands is actually a two-CD best-of with a shorter third disc featuring "bonus tracks." Disc One begins with the Springfields' hit "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" from the album of the same name, and is the only cut from that group included. Ultimate Collection goes right through the early years with tracks from Stay Awhile -- I Only Want to Be With You (from 1963), "Wishin' and Hopin" and "24 Hours From Tulsa," from Girl Called Dusty issued in 1964, and into "Stay Awhile" from an album of the same name released in 1964. And so it goes, touching on every album Springfield released through 1971 over the first two discs, meaning that virtually all of the hits are here. Disc Three picks up in 1987 with her collaborations with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe from Pet Shop Boys, and gives us four from Reputation, the single "What Have I Done to Deserve This" with P.S. Boys from the Goin' Back retrospective, and a pair of tracks from 1995's Very Fine Love. That the '70s and most of the '80s are ignored, particularly when there was plenty of room on the third disc to represent them, is inexcusable. The Rhino collection, Anthology, is still the one to beat. ~ Thom Jurek
Is Ultimate Collection the best Springfield collection? Well, no; it's missing several of her '60s British hits, like "Losing You," "In the Middle of Nowhere," "Some of Your Lovin'," "Little by Little," "Goin' Back," and "I'll Try Anything." Those are all found on Polygram's The Very Best of Dusty Springfield, the wholly '60s-oriented anthology that remains a superior overview of her best material. If you want something that extends a little wider chronologically, though, this 20-track set is still fine. Her biggest Transatlantic '60s hits ...

Julius Caesar review
$14.45 William Shakespeare's multifaceted dialogue, layered upon complex human motivations, gives actors a chance to sink or shine, and in this film adaptation of JULIUS CAESAR, Marlon Brando, John Gielgud, and James Mason prove themselves well up to the task, creating one of the most watchable versions of the tragic play. Warnings for Caesar to beware the Ides of March heighten a tension already made urgent by Cassius's exhortations to his fellow senators to assassinate Caesar before he gains more power. Controlled camera shots maintain the vintage stagelike feel of many scenes, reminding the viewer of JULIUS CAESAR's prestigious history, while characters flowing from one scene to the next break the play out of its past and into the more dynamic world as only the film drama can. The Oscar-nominated Brando's (as Marc Antony) powerful "Friends, Romans, countrymen" speech is the centerpiece of this masterwork, throbbing with pain, indignation, and secret intentions. This adaptation of the monumental play will reassure viewers that ...

$6.55 Kat Ellis's (Debra Messing) worst nightmare is about to come true. Not only is her younger, half-sister, Amy (Amy Adams), getting married before her, but to add insult to injury, the groom's (Jack Davenport) best man is Kat's ex-fiancée, Jeffrey (Jeremy Sheffield). Two years after being dumped, Kat is a single New Yorker and can't bear to attend the festivities at her parent's London home alone, so she does the next best thing: she hires an escort to play her boyfriend. Her rented date, Nick (Dermot Mulroney), fits the bill perfectly. He's handsome, intelligent, well spoken, intuitive, and a perfect gentleman--a virtual bargain at $6,000. The plan? Make Kat's ex sorry that he ever let her go.
But the plan takes a turn when Kat finds herself attracted to Nick, and the feeling seems to be mutual. But will their business arrangement stand in the way of a relationship? And just what is it that Kat's ex has been dying to tell her? Messing is endearing as Kat, who seems to be simultaneously bewildered and bemused by her situation. Mulroney, meanwhile, is at his most charming as Nick. Clare Kilner (HOW TO DEAL) directs this romantic comedy ...

$9.69 ALIEN VS. PREDATOR relegated its intergalactic grudge match to Antarctica, keeping most of humankind gleefully ignorant. This time around, though, the destruction takes place in suburban America, and those who have been waiting for it finally get to witness facehuggers, alien hybrids, and the dreadlocked Predator wreak some homeland havoc. Directors Colin and Greg Strause (billed as "The Brothers Strause") don't seem concerned with achieving the tension of the original ALIEN and PREDATOR films, instead using their visual effects backgrounds to create a steady stream of monsters, gore, and goo. Picking up where AVP ended, REQUIEM sees Predator on a homebound spacecraft when a baby alien/Predator hybrid bursts from his chest, causing the ship to crash in the Colorado woods. Several facehugger specimens escape, planting eggs down the throats of a hunter and his son. Soon, baby aliens emerge from their bodies and head for town, where ex-con Dallas (Steven Pasquale), Iraq War vet Kelly (Reiko Aylesworth), pizza delivery boy Ricky (Johnny Lewis), high school heartthrob Jesse (Kristen Hager), and sheriff Morales (John Ortiz) have their own separate encounters with the creatures. The dead Predator's home planet receives a transmission of the alien outbreak, and a fellow denizen of his world is dispatched to clean up the multiplying aliens, eventually causing enough death and destruction for government intervention.
This is essentially a slasher film (or FREDDY VS. JASON with aliens), and the characters in REQUIEM are secondary to the creature effects. Fans of the comic books and videogames will appreciate the Strauses‘ ...
