| Hail to Hailstork: American classical music at its best
Adolphus Hailstork is worth getting to know for more reasons than the fact that he is one of the all-too-few Afro-American composers. While listening to his Third Symphony one will no doubt hear the influence of Aaron Copland: wide open sonorities, lively syncopation, eloquent lyricism. But Hailstork takes this all-American symphonic sound and moulds it to his own purposes. The ideas that emerge in the first movement sonata form reflect a wonderfully individual lyricism. The slow movement is a moving contemplation, the scherzo offers lively barnstorming, and the finale brings this exuberant work to a fittingly joyous conclusion. The Second Symphony reflects a different persepctive as Hailstork's robust sound is here tempered by more seasoned, even embittered, sonorities, as they refelct his response to the struggles and abuses of slavery. And yet the work falls within the same ingratiatingly lyrical context. This is music of rich spirit, sophistication, and engaging emotion. What a joy it is to discover that the American symphonic sound is still alive and so relevantly and distinctly represented in the music of Adolphus Hailstork.
