$19.59 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that play to the Who's main strengths. Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters (the perverted Uncle Ernie, ...

$6.49 If you don't have eclectic taste in music, soundtracks can present a problem. Sometimes a soundtrack will focus on one style of music exclusively, but most of the time, a director will use any types of music he/she finds useful -- regardless of genre. The director's job isn't catering to those who limit themselves to one genre of music -- it's selecting any music that enables him/her to tell the story well. So if a director finds that everything from heavy metal to R&B to adult contemporary helps him/her tell a story, you could end up with a very diverse soundtrack. To fully appreciate the soundtrack for the 1985 film Vision Quest, you need to appreciate ...

Animation Soundtrack CD music
$15.65 As their submission to the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival, songwriter Jeff Bowen and librettist Hunter Bell decided to, as Bowen puts it in the song "An Original Musical," "write a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical." Naturally, when it came to "Filling Out the Form" (another song), in the bracketed space marked "[title of show]," they titled this show [title of show]. The result displays the writer/performers' affection for and understanding of the form of the musical, as well as their ambitions and uncertainties, all of this expressed in contemporary American slang. (The album contains enough cursing to satisfy a rap star, but does not carry a parental advisory sticker.) There is one song in which the two female performers, Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff, ponder about each other, "What Kind of Girl Is She," a question that seems to be answered by their follow-up duet, "Secondary Characters." The four singers work up their greatest enthusiasm in "Die Vampire, Die!," a song about the various forms of discouragement facing the creative artist, including actual people and also the voices inside the artist's own head. ~ William Ruhlmann
