Though never an influential guitarist (he rarely soloed and frequently went silent altogether), Eddie Condon exerted a significant influence on jazz by virtue of the bands he led and his imposing stage presence. An acerbic wit and talented raconteur, Condon was, at his peak, a very popular figure on the Chicago jazz scene. His style of playing is closely associated with that city, though it will sound an awful lot like vintage New Orleans jazz to neophyte listeners. This live recording was made in a high school gym in Syracuse, NY, in April of 1971; the original reel-to-reel tapes were discovered in a basement and remastered before they could deteriorate further than they had. The resulting sound is acceptable, but the playing is brilliant. On this night, Condon was leading a sextet that featured Kenny Davern on clarinet and soprano sax, Bernie Privin on trumpet, Lou McGarity on trombone, and a rhythm section consisting of the exceptional pianist Dill Jones, bassist Jack Lesberg, and drummer Cliff Leeman. HOLLIES is a comprehensive album that features the catchy and infectious sound of the seminal U.K. rockers. The Hollies' third album saw a band in the throes of transition between the Merseybeat and rock & roll with which they established themselves, and the folk-rock and soul music that was blowing the strongest winds of change in 1965. They clean up their backlog of cover staples with versions of tunes by Lloyd Price, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison, and delve into soul by taking on the Miracles' "Mickey's Monkey" and Curtis Mayfield's "You Must Believe Me." Their attempt at "Fortune Teller" won't make you forget the Rolling Stones' version; nor, for that matter, are any of the other covers impressive. That leaves five reasonably good originals, the best of which are the gorgeous "So Lonely" and the excellent Merseybeat knockoff "When I Come Home to You." They also sound Beatlesque on "I've Been Wrong," but "Too Many People" and their cover of Peter, Paul & Mary's "Very Last Day" hearken to a folk-rock direction. The album was issued in the U.S. as Hear! Here!, replacing "Mickey's Monkey" with their number one British hit "I'm Alive." [The album was reissued by British EMI in 1998 with both the stereo and mono mixes featured on a single CD.] ~ Richie Unterberger This record would have disappeared long ago were it not for regal centerpiece "The Air That I Breathe," arguably pop's greatest ballad. The rest of the material naturally pales in comparison, but 1974's Hollies delivers likable-enough smiley face rock with the quintet's lilting trademark harmonies throughout. Of course, silly star fables like "Out on the Road" can't measure up to past glories. Same goes for the morally ambiguous, similarly titled openers.
