| | Nein Luxury CD Nein Discography of CDs
Luxury, the Nein's first full-length album without bassist Casey Burns, finds the band branching out even farther from their previous, spiky-yet-atmospheric sound than they did on the Transitionalisms EP. Dale Flattum's sonic maniupulations and flights of fancy used to be doodles in the corners of the Nein's songs, but now they're just as important as the rest of the band's singing and playing, adding substance as well as depth and texture. Even tracks such as "Radical Chic," "Burn Construction," and "Achilles Last Tape Solo," which have the bouncy, angular sound of The Nein and Wrath of Circuits, have a dose of mystery and unpredictability, thanks to Flattum's increased contributions. For most of Luxury, the Nein manages to balance the change in their song-to-noise ratio well and come up with some intriguing combinations along the way. "Sweet Vague" invents breezy, brooding, robotic bossa nova; "Attitude and Mirrors" pits crashing beats against a wistful acoustic guitar; and "The Future Crumbles" touches on the album's paranoid feel with apocalyptic singalong folktronica. And on "Journalist 1" and "Journalist 2," which turn radio static, junkyard percussion, and delicate guitars into a pair of surprisingly subtle songs, the Nein dives into previously uncharted but oddly pretty territory. As Luxury unfolds, it becomes more and more experimental, with mixed results. "Ennio," a Morricone-inspired soundscape, is a standout, as is the wittily named cut-and-paste of "Decollage." However, the meandering "Wreck-We-Um-Dub" slows the album's momentum, and the tracks that follow don't quite recover it. Fortunately, most of the risks the Nein takes on Luxury pay off, and when they do, the tension between their experimental and pop sides make for pleasantly challenging listening. ~ Heather Phares

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Luxury songs
$8.49 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. There is even a "Joy To The World" medley mixing the old and the new--the traditional Christmas song and the Three Dog Night hit. And, as usual, her gospel-voiced background ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Luxury album
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs ...
| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Luxury CD music
$16.44 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with those who co-opt her on the radio, she still is slightly skewed, willing to go so far over the top she goes beyond camp, yet still channeling it through ...
| | Doyle Lawson Once And For Always/News Is Out CD (1999)
Luxury music CDs
$15.05 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This disc was released simultaneously with The Original Band, and, like its counterpart, it combines the contents of two Quicksilver albums from the early '80s. If this one is the less-consistently satisfying of the two compilations, it's probably due in part to the stress of a constantly changing lineup -- bassist and singer Lou Reid had left by the time Once & for Always was recorded, and by the following album the entire band was different with the exception of Lawson. There was a slight but noticeable drop in vocal quality during this period; while the ensemble singing is still uncannily tight, no member of the band emerges as an outstanding lead singer. Nor is the song quality as consistent. There ...
