Usually when black metal blends with electronic music, the results are in the continuum between the micro-genres called darkwave and goth metal: think Sisters of Mercy meets Black Sabbath. On A Greater Darkness, long-running Norwegian black metal act Red Harvest create something that's musically related to both styles, but doesn't qualify as either. A Greater Darkness is an undeniably heavy album, filled with doomy, foreboding atmosphere even on comparatively melodic tunes like "Beyond the Limits of Physical Experience." At the same time, this is not mere cookie-cutter death metal, because even when the drums are doing the familiar double-time gallop, the rest of the band tends to favor slow, heavy riffs that wouldn't sound out of place on an American stoner rock album. And throughout the album, industrial-style sampled noises and sequenced keyboards hint at the gothy disco-metal hybrid of prime Nine Inch Nails while never quite tipping over into that style. All this leads to the epic ten-minute throb of "Distorted Eyes," which builds slowly, bit by bit, into a full-on maelstrom of noise in a fashion oddly reminiscent of post-rock experimentalists like Godspeed You Black Emperor!. The commingling of varied musical styles on A Greater Darkness provides intriguing new textures to an increasingly well-worn musical style. ~ Stewart Mason

When members of very different sounding bands get together for an all-star project, one is never sure what to expect. The members of Scum have belonged to bands ranging from Emperor (guitarist Samoth and drummer Faust) to Turbonegro (bassist Happy Tom) to Amen (lead singer Casey Chaos) to Mindgrinder (guitarist Cosmocrator). Chris Vrenna has accomplished quite a lot since leaving his position as drummer for Nine Inch Nails. As a producer, he's worked with a diverse range of artists who includes David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Cold, and Xzibit. As a remixer, he's lent his knob-twiddling talents to U2, Nelly Furtado, and Weezer. And now, in Tweaker's The Attraction to All Things Uncertain, he has his first solo project. But you can't help comparing his sound to that of ex-boss Trent Reznor. Eerie ambient atmospheres, haunting synth sounds that lend the music a gothic sort of appeal, industrial-style beats that land just this side of funky, and occasional blasts of noisy, distorted guitar: These are Reznor's stock-in-trade, and this album shows Vrenna soaked up quite a bit from his apprenticeship with NIN. That said, while not quite as effective as Reznor's best work, Vrenna does add a few twists along the way to give The Attraction to All Things Uncertain a unique appeal.
