Rainbow Sprinkles
$8.99 Sony's Favorite Children's Songs packs a whopping 90 kids' songs onto three CDs. Virtually every popular children's song is represented, including "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Clementine," "I've Been Working On the Railroad," "Hokey Pokey," and "The Eensy Weensy Spider," among many, many others. The productions and arrangements are fair to decent, featuring a child vocal group and session musicians who don't get in the way of the songs too much. The collection has only a couple of drawbacks: it doesn't offer quite as much personality as a more individual album of children's songs would, and its track list is too scattered, moving from energetic singalongs ...
| | Merry Christmas With The Smurfs CD (1995)
Rainbow Sprinkles
$8.79 Merry Christmas with the Smurfs is an album of traditional Christmas tunes sung with straightforward appreciation by the Smurfs. In addition to caroling about the 12 Days of Christmas and Santa Claus coming to town, there is a bold air of spirituality, most notably in "Churchbells are Singing." It is indeed alarming to hear cartoon elves claiming "Mary gave birth to our King." Produced with a real feeling of sincerity and joy for the occasion, the record won't be a holiday must-hear, ...

| | Victor Mecyssne Hush Money CD (1998)
Rainbow Sprinkles
$17.75 Victor Mecyssne is almost a throwback to the Southern-bred musician of the early 20th century who was brought up on a diet that included jazz, blues, Dixieland, pop, country, and a dash of Cajun spice. Very rootsy in both his musical foundation and execution, Mecyssne seems to be as much a part of a Tennessee Williams play as he is a citizen of modern America ready to embark upon the 21st century. Coming across like a hot, humid, lazy summer afternoon, Hush Money is the perfect choice for lounging around when things heat up. It goes remarkably well with lemonade and mint juleps, and causes the listener to doze off into another world. With equal parts Al Hirt, Bessie Smith, and Count Basie, Mecyssne makes the kind of music too often forgotten by those who know better, and unknown to newer generations. A big sound that swings, special guests include Duane Jarvis, Lucinda Williamsb and Tim Carroll. Unusual instruments, flgelhorn, euphone, and petit pormophone among them, and elaborate arrangements make this a treat in any part of the world, no matter what the weather, Mecyssne is unlike anyone else. Highlights include "Drinkin' on a Dollar," "Going to New Orleans," and "Uma's Bluebirds/Lower Broadway." An impressive project to say the least. ~ Jana Pendragon
Victor Anthony* plays old-school folk music Southern style. The set list is never the same, but you can expect bluesy originals, obscure trad numbers from his native Tennessee, and rootsy pages from the American songbook. The one thing you can take to the bank is that every song will be delivered with soul – nothing fancy, just the facts and a bagful of juicy chords. A fulltime musician since 1985, he’s played in 48 of the 50 states, across the pond, and now he’s taking on British Columbia from his new home in the Gulf Islands, where he lives with his wife, Joëlle. His three CDs have received rave reviews, international attention, and lots of North American airplay. There’s a new recording in the works too, ...

Rainbow Sprinkles
$13.25 Although the Dorsey Brothers band gets first billing on this album, the studio groups (which include trumpeter Bunny Berigan, trombonist Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey on clarinet and alto) are actually in a subsidiary role on these performances, accompanying singers Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey and Ethel Waters. Crosby and Waters are on four numbers, while Bailey is showcased on eight. Although strings are added to the Waters songs, the music is generally pretty jazz-oriented. Highlights include Bing's "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn," and Bailey's "There's a Cabin in the Pines," and Waters' "Stormy Weather." ...
