| | Best Of My Love: The Best Of The Emotions CD (1996)
Witness, Future, Vintage
$6.75 This 16-track, 69-minute disc surveys the Emotions' five-year, five-album stay on Columbia Records (and the custom label ARC), which was the group's most successful period, featuring the gold number one hit "Best of My Love" and the gold Top Ten hit "Boogie Wonderland" (on which the Emotions backed their mentors, Earth, Wind & Fire), both of which are heard here, along with four other songs that saw action on the pop charts. Surprisingly, the Emotions' five singles that only made the R&B charts are excluded in favor of album tracks. Unlike their earlier period at Stax, at Columbia the Emotions were essentially an adjunct to EW&F and its leader, Maurice White, and since EW&F featured tenor and falsetto vocals, the similarity was often heightened, especially on "Boogie Wonderland." Nevertheless, the sisters sang well ...
| | Nas Illmatic CD (1994)
Witness, Future, Vintage
$6.75 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic ...

| | Mark Gardener These Beautiful Ghosts CD (2005)
Witness, Future, Vintage
$13.05 The beginning of Ride's descent, according to many a shoegazer, can be traced to the day someone slipped the band a copy of the Byrds' Notorious Byrd Brothers. From that moment, the band underwent a complete makeover. Multiple layers of storming guitars were replaced with an acoustic guitar, strings, and a tamboura (and a contribution from Deep Purple's Jon Lord), while the shabby university dropout look was exchanged for Laurel Canyon chic (as if they had taken a time machine back to the 1969 set of Mr. Dressup). Any detractor with common sense had to at least concede that Mark Gardener's songs on Carnival of Light ("From Time to Time," for instance) easily surpassed the ones written by Andy Bell ("Crown of Creation"), so it was apparent that Gardener's transition was relatively natural. And then came Tarantula, where the downward spiral began to look more like a greased chute -- Gardener was roughly (only) eight percent responsible for that. Between then and the 2005 release of his first solo album, Gardener released a single on Shifty Disco, made an album with the hard-to-remember Animalhouse, recorded a couple guest appearances, and did some ambitious touring. He used the money from the touring ...
