Part II: Rockaria CD music
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar ...

| | Goo Goo Dolls Hold Me Up CD (1990) Reissue
Part II: Rockaria songs
$11.39 The Goos' third album was in part seen as their commercial step up, though in fact the real breakthrough didn't come along for a few more years. It's little surprise why there was more of a push for this album, though. If it wasn't as powerfully distinct as Nirvana's Nevermind, Hold Me Up is as much a product of '80s underground punk and indie (and dollops of bands like Cheap Trick) as its more famous counterpart. The Replacements Jr. tag that dogged the Goos in early years still has a connection here, unquestionably. But considering at that point Paul Westerberg was starting down his road toward tasteful irrelevance, Hold Me Up is the perfect stand-in for those who wanted a little more energy with their catchy but emotional rock. If anything, Rzeznik's agreeably ragged and certainly Westerberg-inspired vocals start to really come into their own even more than before, now a great contrast to Takac's amiable brattishness. The latter can have ...

| | Fred Waring We All Screams For Ice Cream CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Part II: Rockaria songs
$13.15 Fred Waring did not invent the sweet dance orchestra, the collegiate hot dance band, the glee club or the electric blender, but he did invest enough effort, time and money in each of these entities to revolutionize both popular entertainment and food processing during the 1920s, the Great Depression, the Second World War and the Eisenhower Era. In 2002, the Jasmine reissue label brought out a compilation containing 24 recordings made between 1925 and 1932 by Waring & His Pennsylvanians, a variously sugary, sentimental, funny, irreverent and exciting little ensemble. In addition to the rigorously sophomoric "Collegiate," highlights include the irresistibly hot instrumental "Does My Sweetie Do -- And How"; the famous "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream"; a cheerful, bouncy rendition of Irving Berlin's "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy," and a profoundly romantic rendering of Arthur Schwartz's "Dancing in the Dark" that reveals the almost cosmic scope of Howard Dietz's lyrics. There is also a beautifully arranged 1928 remake of "Sleep," a gentle waltz ...
