| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Free So Free album
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority of songs surpassing the four-minute mark. But Stamey uses his production savvy to build these songs into "mid-life symphonies," to make Brian Wilson's phrase more age-appropriate. A solitary piano and ...

| | Oscar McLollie Hey! Lollie Lollie CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Free So Free CD music
$15.69 Eighteen of McLollie's 1953-55 uptempo sides are collected on this CD. Like many collections of early-to-mid-'50s R&B on the Modern label, there's some sameness to the material and arrangements that limits its appeal for non-specialists. Yet it's a little more enjoyable than many such single-artist collections, though, due to the nonchalant humor of much of the material and McLollie's vocals, and to the lingering big band-jump blues feel. At times some of these later sides got close to rock'n'roll, particularly "Roll Hot Rod Roll," which starts off with a "one for the money" chorus that resembles, just a little, the one that Carl Perkins would use to kick off "Blue Suede Shoes" a bit later. "All That Oil in Texas" is also a highlight for those who like their R&B-swing droll and witty ("all that oil in Texas, and not one drop is mine"). Completists might be a little miffed that this actually is not the complete output of McLollie for the Modern label. Because it was decided to focus the anthology on his uptempo work, it doesn't have his doo-wop recordings for the label. In addition, it uses previously unissued alternate takes of "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus" and "Hey Lolly Lolly," and an undubbed version of "Wiggle Toe," though the versions that appeared on Modern singles are available on other reissues. This CD also includes previously unissued instrumental versions of "Hot ...
| | Boz Scaggs Down Two Then Left CD (1977) Japan; Remastered; DSD Remastered
Free So Free music CDs
$24.65 Also available in a 3-pack with SLOW DANCER and SILK DEGREES.
Singer/songwriter Boz Scaggs hit it huge in 1976 with "Lido's Shuffle," and while he never again enjoyed similar sales figures, he continued to crank out some solid music, including this 11 track outing which features "Still Falling For You," "Hard Times," and "Whatcha Gonna Tell Your Man."
With 1974's Slow Dancer, produced by Johnny Bristol, Scaggs recast himself as a more R&B-infused singer. 1976's multi-million-selling Silk Degrees found Scaggs' switch paying off commercially, displaying enough skills and chops that the odious "blue-eyed soul" tag was deemed pass. This is noticeably more detached than Silk Degrees. And although this set is indeed quirky, the often unsurprising production featuring almost-on-cue guitar solos makes this album more "mainstream" than it had to be. "Still Falling for You" kicks the album off and sets ...

Free So Free CD music
$8.49 The evolution of sound set forth in their fi rst record self-titled CD, CUBIKY, released in 2004 on Escuchalo Records, now consolidates to make Cubiky an electro-power trio that fuses the energies, feelings, sensations and sounds of the three elements that form their concept. Carlos Sotelo (programming, guitar, voice and keyboards), Trippy Castillo (bass, voice and synths) and Alex Arce (drums, kaoss pad) are Cubiky. Together they create a group that dedicates itself to breaking cultural and linguistic barriers through danceably fresh, pleasant and powerfull electronic melodies. Their awesome stage presence and the incredible energy exhibited in their live performances have made them heavy hitters in L.A.’s Latin Alternative music scene. Cubiky’s well-earned reputation has allowed them to play abroad at such events as the annual “DJ Dance” festival celebrated in Acapulco (Mexico), South by South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, alternating with artists like Plastilina Mosh, Nortec Collective, Andrea Echeverri, Ely Guerra and Lucybell among others. They’ve taken their multimedia show on the road through much of the United States and performed in throughout Mexico in cities like Guadalajara, Toluca, Cuernavaca and Puebla. They’ve been awarded the special honor of performing in a special show at the historical Zocalo in Mexico City. Their international recognition has grown phenomenally since the release of their debut CD, resulting in Cubiky being tapped to participate with acts like Cafe Tacuba,Molotov, and Julieta Venegas by contributing their electro rock take on “Golpes en el Corazón” to Fonovisa’s “Homenaje de los Tigres del Norte” esteemed tribute CD. They’ve also gained recognition in Spain via their participation in the much-acclaimed compilation “Electronic Latin Freaks.” Cubiky’s “Conmigo” video, from their self-titled first CD, is still in rotation on MTVS, LATV, SITV, HTV and MUN2. Early reports from industry insiders confirm what we expected: Cubiky’s latest CD, “Aura,” is awesome! It has piqued the interests of the internationally upcoming mexican video director Sofia Garza ...
