The material on this collection was culled from two live recordings made by Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 for the Armed Forces Radio Service in 1943 and 1944. It includes many of his most popular songs, some of which remain favorites on the novelty-nostalgia circuit -- "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" (presented here in two versions, one sung by the delightful Ida James) and "Five Guys Named Moe" are among those. Chieli Minucci, the leader of Special EFX, is an excellent guitarist with a style sometimes hinting at early George Benson. His brand of crossover music has catchy melodies, danceable rhythms and concise solos. Got It Goin' On has short spots for three different crossover saxophonists (Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Marion Meadows) but the focus is mostly on the leader and the appealing ensembles. While Minucci's individual originals are not particularly memorable, his music is accessible and works well both as background music and for dancers. ~ Scott Yanow
