A flood of live albums have attended the years just before Townes Van Zandt's death in 1997 and the years immediately after; this is another one. Its status as a collector's item is attested by the sleeve notation that it is a limited edition, with only 2,000 copies printed. The intended audience, then, is Van Zandt fans, who will welcome it as they would any recorded concert performance by the dour singer/songwriter. Those fans will know that, like such apparently depressive artists as Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman, Van Zandt was actually hilarious in concert. His shows featured his songs of derelicts and degradation, of course, but his manner, as here, was self-deprecating about the material. At times during this performance, recorded at the small Los Angeles club McCabe's on February 10, 1995, he seems amazed -- or perhaps the right word is appalled -- at what is coming out of his own mouth in the songs' lyrics. At least, he says, as he makes his way through Lightnin' Hopkins' "Short Haired Woman Blues" (which is about a woman whose hair is full of rats), he didn't write that one himself, although that doesn't explain why he's singing it. The first half of Rebirth is a rather phenomenal document: mood-driven and densely textured psychedelia at its very best. "Daybreak" opens the album with what seems to be a fairly quaint ditty until its controlled eruptions of orchestration, unique and enticing, cause the music to grow in dimension. "Maypole" also initially leans toward preciousness, the themes of childhood naïveté employed by dozens of bands in the wake of Sgt. Pepper's, but in its seesawing-calliope backing and minor-key shifts there is also something compellingly creepy that resonates more of shadows than innocence. It leads wonderfully into "Don't Ever Lose It," a macabre fairy tale as enigmatically disorienting as it is rocking, and the delicate "Beautiful," which (particularly owing to Stephen Perron's haunting vocals) lives up to its title in the spookiest of ways. "Sitting on a Flower," a Cassell Webb showcase, is also powerful stuff. The album's only significant failing is a tendency during its last half to lose sight of the experience it means to convey. Brian Transeau undoubtedly deserves recognition for the scope of his work, but for all the bells and whistles on this double CD, it's as if listeners don't get to hear them as distinctly as they ought to. This Maryland-born, musically gifted DJ and multi-instrumentalist sets higher standards than most for club-ready dance music and has garnered well-deserved praise for his album, Movement in Still Life (in all its various forms of release). Riding the wave of sales, Nettwerk Records dug through the vaults and paperwork to cash in with R&R. Surprisingly, this promising buffet of trance, acid house, and dreamy techno has been left under the heat lamps for too long, and everything seems bland. Transeau decides to be the DJ/mixer for this epic collection, along with the CD "beatmixing" skills of Andy Gray, which, by having disc two cued up in advance, technically gives the listener almost two and a half hours of uninterrupted 4/4 beat (even hardcore clubbers might want a break before then).
