A former singer for the Reeltime Travelers, Martha Scanlan has a delicate voice that's complimented by an empathetic backing band that includes roots royalty in the father and daughter drum duo of Levon and Amy Helm, as well as various mandolin, fiddle, and banjo players. Scanlan performs a sensitive cover of Bob Dylan's "Went to See the Gypsy" and does a rocking "Get Right Church" that's full of gospel fire, but she really shines on the songs she sings solo, backed only by her own acoustic guitar, such as "Set Me Up High" and "Ten Thousand Charms."

Dirty Linen (p.66) - "[The album] comes as a revelation, an instant classic and one of those rare albums that defies genre and generation." No Depression (p.118) - "Projecting a sense of isolation that is as powerful as its sense of place....It's the kind of work that can be haunting and comforting at the same time." West Was Burning CD music
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without ...

West Was Burning music CDs
$9.99 A solid follow-up to 2005's SOLO ACOUSTIC VOLUME 1, this sequel was recorded at various concerts across several continents in the last few years, providing a wide overview of Jackson Browne's career as both a songwriter and a performer. Ranging across the breadth of Browne's lengthy career, from 1972's "Something Fine" to a handful of songs from 2002's THE NAKED RIDE HOME, SOLO ACOUSTIC VOLUME 2 is lighter on the instantly recognizable radio hits, although "Somebody's Baby" and "In the Shape of a Heart" are both accounted for. Even more appealing for longtime fans, over half of the 12 ...
