Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. | | MC5 Purity Accuracy CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Someday CD music
$16.29 With just about every veteran rock act getting the "box-set treatment" by the early 21st century, it was only a matter of time until one of Detroit proto-punk's finest, the MC5, got their own multi-disc overview. And it finally arrived in 2004, in the form of the six-disc box, Purity Accuracy. But this sprawling comp does not follow the expected setup for your average box set (favorites mixed with unreleased rarities) -- its first few discs are comprised of demos, alternate takes, and early or forgotten tunes, while the rest focuses on live material. The more interesting outtakes on the first disc include a tender Fred "Sonic" Smith acoustic demo of "Over and Over," a kick-ass early version of "Sister Anne" dubbed "Pledge Song," and a reading of the group's psychedelic early concert favorites, "Black to Comm." Long considered one of rock's most explosive and high-energy live acts, the remaining discs include show highlights from the group's peak years (who can ever get enough of such classics as "Starship," "Borderline," and "Kick Out the Jams"?), as well as the last disc, which showcases audio highlights from the 2004 DVD, Sonic Revolution: A Celebration of the MC5 (including a version of "Sister Anne" sung by Motörhead's Lemmy). Purity Accuracy is obviously not aimed at the new fan, but rather at the MC5 fanatic, who needs every bit of music the band committed to tape. And for that select bunch, Purity Accuracy should supply quite a lot of mega-decibel listening pleasure. ~ Greg Prato
This compilation of MC5 rarities is a single-disc digest of highlights from Easy Action's six-CD box set, also titled Purity Accuracy, that was released in 2004. Just as that set brought together a lot of material that had been circulating in one form or another for years, hardcore MC5 fans won't find much in the way of surprises on this album -- six of the 15 tracks here first surfaced on ROIR's Babes in Arms anthology in 1983, and just about everything else has appeared on one of the many semi-authorized collections that Alive Records issued in the 1990s. So this disc is clearly redundant for the faithful, and folks first dipping their toes into the MC5's great music would be better served with Babes in ...

| | Orion Experience Cosmicandy CD (2007)
Someday CD music
$16.45 THE ORION EXPERIENCERemember when rock 'n roll was fun, before all the shoe-gazing, skinny-jeans-wearing bands started to take it too seriously? Armed with an arsenal of energetic, sexually-charged power-pop tunes, The Orion Experience is bent on making sure you do too.The eclectic quintet, fronted by former Kitty in the Tree singer Orion Simprini, is fresh on the scene. Having formed in January 2005 their eager excitement explodes from each track on the debut album. Their carefree, positive vibe recalls late '60s and early '70s songwriting, spiked with sweet harmonies and toe-tapping beats. If The Orion Experience doesn't make you want to leap from your chair and dance, you might want to check your pulse. For Orion, who handpicked each member of the group for their personalities, the band's camaraderie is the key element to their solid sound. "Every individual is important, but put together, they create a powerful, positive energy," Orion said of The Orion Experience, which, despite bearing his name he also calls "more of acollective than one person."Their story begins when Orion met Linda Horwatt in college, where they were the sole scholarship recipients in the theatre arts department Sparks flew and eventually the pair moved to New York. Though they parted ways romantically Orion and Linda continued to connect through music. The petite singer, who is also an indie film actress - and, as Orion says, "our cheerleader" - now shares vocal duties with Orion, adding airy harmonies as well as sweet keys, hand claps and tambourine slaps. Each member of The Orion Experience seems perfectly matched with his or her instrument. Larger-than-life Marcus Ferrar, who oozes energy and confidence, appropriately holds court over the drumsLaid-back Kareem Lamar, a member of the Mash Out Posse that toured with Snoop Dogg, Korn and Linkin Park on the Projekt: Revolution tour - picks ...
| | John Dummer Lost 1973 Album CD (2008)
Someday music CDs
$14.35 The John Dummer Blues Band's reputation as one of those groups that hung forever on the cusp of a major step forward, but never quite made it over the top, is one of those odd little injustices with which the British blues scene forever prickles. There is simply no way of judging why one band made it while another failed to crackle, but Dummer and company were unluckier than most and, by 1973, their fortunes had reached rock bottom. Vertigo, their home for two albums, was about to let them go as part of the company-wide purge that so devastated what had once been one of Britain's most visionary record labels -- and when the bandmembers returned to the studio, it was in the knowledge that they had one last chance to convince the bigwigs to keep them on board. They should have succeeded, too. The result is a pičce de résistance, a sparkling album that not only packs some of the band's best ever recordings, but also boasts one of their strongest ever lineups: organist Colin Earl and guitarists Dave Kelly and Pete Emery, a rhythm section of Ian Thompson and Pick Withers, and, on saxophone, the legendary Graham Bond. But somehow it all slipped through the cracks. Within a year, Bond was dead; this may well have been his last ever recording session, a manic four-day span that saw no less than 11 tracks kicked out, and then abandoned. Before that, though, Vertigo did indeed pass on the album, and attempts to land a U.S. deal via the Foghat connection (Colin Earl, of course) ...
