Personnel: David Bromberg (vocals, acoustic guitar); David Bromberg. Recording information: The Baby Grand, Wilmington, DE. Author: Bob Dylan. On his first solo album in nearly two decades, folk guitarist David Bromberg picks up just exactly where he left off. TRY ME ONE MORE TIME is an all-acoustic set of 16 songs, nearly all of them traditional folk and blues tunes, such as the ballad "East Virginia" and the sprightly instrumental showcase "Buck Dancer's Choice." Along with these, Bromberg essays a pair of tunes by Robert Johnson and one each by Blind Willie McTell, Reverend Gary Davis, and Elizabeth Cotton. It's proof of Bromberg's mastery that in this setting, Bob Dylan's "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" sounds like a beloved old folk standard. Had David Bromberg been making new recordings all along, then Try Me One More Time would be a welcome addition to his catalog. An all-acoustic, solo set of blues and folk tunes -- one original, several traditional and the rest by established writers such as Bob Dylan, Rev. Gary Davis and Robert Johnson -- the album feels intimate, honest and earthy, and of course the guitar playing is never less than masterful. But Bromberg hadn't released a new album in a long 17 years when Try Me One More Time hit, and because of that it's an underwhelming return. There is no denying that Bromberg, who basically gave up the road and the studio at the dawn of the '90s in order to become a violin maker, possesses an innate love for the roots Americana that populates his comeback album. And on its own merits, it's a satisfying enough listen -- he sounds perfectly comfortable within the familiar domain of this material. But therein lies the disappointment: he's too comfortable. Bromberg's interpretations show little imagination or ingenuity, and after such a lengthy sabbatical, fans would be right to expect something that displays growth and movement in an artist. Try Me One More Time doesn't. Bromberg's Delta-style guitar work is, as always, note-perfect (the two instrumentals are a treat and his slide playing is sweet), but fans already know he can do that with his eyes closed. And while Bromberg, never much of a singer -- the voice is a bit more gravelly these days but otherwise unchanged -- is well-suited for the minimalist renditions of tracks like Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," Elizabeth Cotten's "Shake Sugaree" and Davis' "Trying to Get Home," there are no real surprises in how he handles those chestnuts. It's not that anyone expected David Bromberg to come back and make a hip-hop record or something equally out of character, but while he undoubtedly enjoyed cutting these songs that have always been dear to his heart, there are few clues here as to what he's been up to for the nearly two decades he spent out of earshot. ~ Jeff TamarkinRolling Stone (p.86) - "The fluid, orchestral invention of Bromberg's fingerpicking...is in undiminished bloom..." Down Beat (p.61) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Bromberg shows grace -- not flashiness -- in his picking and sings with the quirky charm of time past." Dirty Linen (p.87) - "[T]his is a good listen and certainly Bromberg knows his way around the material." | Try Me One More Time Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Bromberg After Years 16 Little gems to illustrate where David's music comes from. His voice may have become somewhat shaky by now, but that just enhances the intimacy of this musical document. The man still has a lot to say, so go ahead, do it, try him one more time. Boy I have missed him Amazingly enough, his voice sent me back 30 years in time! Still as good as ever. Submitted by SGoldMoon (East Tennessee) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Diehard Bromberg fan..... Who will continue listening to his music of "the day." I was thrilled when I saw he was releasing a new album after so many years. Shortly after (in Jan) I saw him in concert again--part of his Reunion Tour (with The Angel Band... wife, et al-who are wonderful, btw, with Bromberg as BACKUP)---WOO HOO...this was a GREAT concert....truly... musicianship was awesome! Time takes its toll on everyone, even Mr. Bromberg, but his fingers and wit are still just as quick....Everyone had a good time (a crowd of old hippies groovin' to songs of our youth).... He mentioned the album, played "Try Me One More Time"...
told us it was just him and an acoustic guitar... I sooooo looked forward to it... I am pretty disappointed.... except for the title song, it is a collection of folk songs... now if you LOVE Americana, and really get into the lore/folk genre, it's perfect for you, don't get me wrong.... but it's not what I can take a large dose of... I was looking forward to some flat pickin', blues and "camp"....classic Bromberg, albeit acoustic...so, I got thru it, pulled it out of the cd player and popped in his first album and Demon in Disguise and smiled again..... I'm gonna' listen to TRY ME ONE MORE TIME one more time over and over!
I loved this album. David's guitar playing is fabulous as usual, and I'm charmed by his voice too. Look, we've all put on a few years, but this album sure put a smile on my face.
He sings sweetly, richly, warmly. The songs are new to me (but might be familiar to other listeners), but his guitar playing is just fabulous. That's what brought me to him (and memories of previous music).

$18.99 In this current worship music environment where many worship artists are looking to write the next universally appealing, radio-friendly worship single, Rita Springer gives us a breathe of fresh air with her new live CD titled "Beautiful You." Rita once again proves that worship music is at its best when it is done live with a congregation. That isn't to say that worship artists shouldn't make studio recordings. In fact Rita's last CD was a studio production and it brought out some wonderful nuances in her talents that we hadn't heard before. But the bottom line is that music that is written for congregations to sing to God is best when it is recorded with a participating congregation. Recorded live at the MorningStar Women's Conference, "Beautiful You" captures an evening of worship that is live, raw and engaging. I have had the pleasure of being in worship services led by Rita and she leads with an aggressive yet graceful confidence. This CD captures almost exactly what I experienced in those worship services. The recording is very "live" and rest assured that I'm not using "live" as a euphemism for poor quality. The recording quality is great and it retains the punchy energy of a live ...
