Musicians can be notoriously picky about choosing tracks from live gigs, but rest assured that this third volume of performances taken from Hod O'Brien's July 2004 stint at Blues Alley is a collection worthy of comparison to the first two volumes, even though the pianist explains in the liner notes that he previously rejected some of them. First of all, what seems like a flaw to a seasoned player may go unnoticed to most fans, particularly since someone of O'Brien's caliber is usually able to improvise off a momentary slip and continue without distraction. It also doesn't hurt that his rhythm section consists of bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Kenny Washington, two of the most in-demand players of their generation. There are no duplications with earlier sets. While this volume focuses on a number of pieces by Tadd Dameron, including a driving take of his popular vehicle "Our Delight," a buoyant, breezy interpretation of the rarely heard "Dameronia" plus a lush treatment of the timeless ballad "If You Could See Me Now" and a snappy rendition of "On a Misty Night." Howard McGhee's infrequently heard bop anthem "Double Talk" is a nice surprise, while O'Brien's arrangements of the two standards, "Easy Living" and "It Could Happen to You," remain fresh in spite of their familiarity to jazz audiences. Hod O'Brien's Live at Blues Alley: Third Set is clearly first rate material from start to finish. ~ Ken Dryden

Put pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Kenny Washington in a club, record them for two evenings, and your are pretty much guaranteed to get at least one CD of excellent music. However, "Live At Blues Alley - Third Set" is fifty nine m

Average Rating: (1 out of 5 stars) 1 star

1 star A good side-man.....but NEVER a trio leader.
This is probably the most boring CD I have ever owned. It lasted just 2 days in my possession before I gave it away. His style is of the 60's (Tommy Flanaghan, Hank Jones, Wynton Kelly school) but nowhere in the same league. I have heard Hod O'Brien in person and he has a very pretty style within a quartet (+) with solos of no more than three choruses. He has sadly not got the capacity and skill to lead a trio. His touch is heavy and never varies, his pedalling poor and there is absolutely no space in his playing. He relentlessly carries this way of playing through the whole CD. The only redeeming feature of this record is the superior playing of Ray Drummond (bass) and Peter Washington (drums).

1 star Good side-man but NO piano trio leader
Hod O'Brien (who I have recently seen in person) is a very acceptable side-man in a quartet (+) situation with solos stretching no more than three choruses. His style is in that context is pretty and in the 60's mould of Tommy Flanaghan, Hank Jones and Wynton Kelly. Sadly though on the CD his touch is heavy and there is absolutely NO sense of space during the long succession of improvised choruses. It becomes a complete bore within a few minutes and I could stand no more than one playing before giving it away. He has not got the necessary intellectual skills to compete in any way with the great pianists as a trio leader. Good bass and drum playing from Ray Drummond and Peter Washington is the only consolation.

Live At Blues Alley: Third Set album
CD $12.95
Here's a core sample of 40 classic ensemble recordings by New Orleans jazz master Jelly Roll Morton. Most of these are Victor recordings, dating from the years 1926-1930, the golden years of Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers. The first two tracks are substantially rarer items originally issued on the OKeh label. "London Blues," played by Jelly Roll Morton's Jazz Band, was recorded in Chicago in 1923; "Soap Suds" (later known as "Fickle Fay Creep") was performed by the St. Louis Levee Band in St. Louis on October 30, 1926 -- this one is gloriously obscure, and its inclusion on this anthology is a major asset. Anyone who knows Morton's ...
