RITES OF UNCOVERING finds Baltimore, Maryland, trio Arbouretum eschewing the rigid structures of traditional folk and blues, but unearthing the droning soul at the root of the forms. The extraordinarily talented singer-songwriter Dave Heumann fronts the band with a voice that echoes both Skip Spence and Will Oldham and guitar chops that imagine Richard Thompson and Tony Iommi as being cut from the same cloth. This is a spectacular, impressive debut.
Audio Mixer: John McEntire.
Recording information: Magic Shop (2005); Rove Studios (2005); SOMA Studios (2005); Two East Audio (2005).

Q (p.98) - "[H]is emotionally wrought songs cover the gamut of life's big themes...and he intones them in a voice so full of foreboding it might give Nick Cave goosebumps." Uncut (p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This wonderful record already feels like a cult classic." Magnet (p.90) - "Arbouretum shares Oldham's vintage, creaky-voiced aesthetic but adds explosive guitar workouts that make it seem like Crazy Horse is coloring the margins." Rites Of Uncovering Music Arbouretum Rites Of Uncovering Songs Rites Of Uncovering Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Excellent This is a great album from start to finish and an excellent follow-up to Long Live The Well-Doer. Arbouretum is a great band and anyone who enjoys any genre of rock should definitely give them a listen. Rites Of Uncovering is intensely mellow in places and the frequently haunting guitars and vocals give me chills. The album is straight forward rock as it should be. If you don't listen to Arbouretum yet you should start. Submitted by watson387 (Butler, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ARBOURETUM: Rites of Uncovering CD (Thrill Jockey) Arbouretum is a project led by Dave Heumann (Anomoanon, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and so on) and “Rites Of Uncovering” is their second full-length release. The material on this release incorporates a diverse range of influences to create eight interesting, but complex, tracks that are not open to quick and easy assimilation nor description. The material is pretty evenly divided between dark, folkish rock and slow, dense rockers. Highlights include the album’s two heaviest pieces, “Pale Rider Blues” and “The Rise” (which both feature excellent and lengthy twin guitar workouts), “Sleep Of Shiloam” (on which Heumann almost sounds like he’s channelling Tom Verlaine during the solo), and my favorite of the quieter tracks, “Mohammed's Hex And Bounty”. Not immediately accessible nor uniformly excellent, but after taking the time to fully absorb the sounds contained within, I found this to be a pretty interesting and solid effort. $12.35 SOLID GOLD/ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER DOLLAR EP brings together the second and third studio releases from the seminal New Wave band, Gang of Four, in one CD.
This rerelease features live versions of "Cheeseburger" and "What We All Want."
Gang of Four's existence had as much to do with Slave and Chic as it did the Sex Pistols and the Stooges, which is something Solid Gold demonstrates more than Entertainment! Any smartypants can point out the irony of a band on Warner Bros. railing against systematic tools of control disguised as entertainment media, but Gang of Four were more observational than condescending. True, Jon King and Andy Gill might have been hooting and hollering in a semiviolent and discordant fashion, but they were saying "think about it" more than "you lot are a bunch of mindless puppets." Abrasiveness was a means to grab the listener, and it worked. Reciting Solid Gold's lyrics on a local neighborhood corner might get a couple interested souls to pay attention. It isn't poetry, and it's no fun; most within earshot would just continue power-walking or tune out while buffing the SUV. Solid Gold has that unholy racket going on beneath the lyrics, an unlikely mutation of catchiness and atonality that made ears perk and (oddly) posteriors shake. With its slightly ironic title, Solid Gold is more rhythmically grounded than the fractured nature of Entertainment!, a politically charged, more Teutonic take on funk. It's a form of release for paranoid accountants. Financial concerns form the basis of the subject matter; the hilarious but realistic "Cheeseburger" is a highlight with its thinly veiled snipe at America: "No classes in the U.S.A./Improve yourself, the choice is yours/Work at your job and make good pay/Make friends, great/Buy them a beer!" This is a nickel less spectacular than the ...
