Baby Grande is undoubtedly the quickest moving indie hip-hop label of 2004, dropping records by everyone from Golden Era classics Brand Nubian to underground femme fatale Jean Grae and frontline political assassin Immortal Technique, all in less than 12 months. Along with less standout releases like Sharkey's Machine and -ready 7L & Esoteric and Outerspace mentors Jedi Mind Tricks, this release seems to have simply been swept up in the movement of the crowd rather than standing out on its own. That is not to say the MCs Planetary and Crypt the Warchild lack in skills. On the contrary, the childhood friends are near flawless in their Latino-tinged delivery. But they might be so tight in their flow that nothing really stands out between the two. Producers 7L, Shuko and Celph Titled (who also drops guest rhymes along with Nubian Sadat X and Jedi Vinnie Paz) craft beats heavy in dark and dramatic strings, although they can occasionally fall into ...

Since their debut, Jedi Mind Tricks have invited a legion of guest rappers to their full-lengths, and Army of the Pharaohs could well be the dénouement; under the billing "Army of the Pharaohs," nearly a dozen different rappers make a total of 50 appearances (all those on just 13 tracks). Also, the record apparently has a concept behind it (from the subtitle "The Torture Papers," at least), but neither Vinnie Paz nor Stupe nor any of the guests ever enlighten listeners about what the concept is, or what it means. (The best bet is yet more conspiracy theories, perhaps wrapped up with some Egyptology, and endless Middle Eastern war.) The only things left to glean from this record are the performances and the productions. As for the productions, it's mostly the usual horrorcore rap, already heard on all of JMT's many full-lengths (itself cribbed from old Gravediggaz or Wu-Tang records). The performances aren't much better, although four of the guests -- the great Esoteric, Apathy, and Celph Titled, plus producer 7L -- do make things interesting on their best appearances: "The Torture Papers," "Listen Up," and "King Among Kings." ~ John Bush

The New Orleans Owls were a spirited seven- to nine-piece band whose hot jazz and interesting arrangements made them a legendary group to early jazz collectors. The band's entire output, 18 selections from five sessions, is reissued on this highly enjoyable CD from the English label Frog. The Owls did not have any famous musicians (other than guitarist Nappy Lamare on the final date), but their versions of such songs as "Stomp Off, Let's Go," "Tampeekoe," "White Ghost Shivers," and "Brotherly Love" in particular are memorable. In addition to those classic sides, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings' final recordings (two takes apiece of "She's Cryin' for Me" and "Everybody Loves Somebody Blues") and the recordings of John Hyman's Bayou Stompers (two versions apiece of a pair of songs that, in addition to the standard instrumentation, include the harmonica of Alvin Gautreaux) wrap up this thoroughly enjoyable disc. ~ Scott Yanow
