Saxophonist Jimmy Greene's fifth effort as a leader sees him in tandem with fellow tenor man Marcus Strickland, but this is not a tenor battle ŕ la Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt. A mainstream neo-bop modernist, Greene presents seven selections that display his broad range of acumen, as a player, composer, and rearranger. Strickland, a slightly younger lion than Greene and a leader in his own right, easily keeps pace with Greene, and in a limited fashion matches the dynamics without sublimating his own voice. The choice of music is quite advanced, including John Coltrane's "26-2," James Black's "Magnolia Triangle," and Sonny Stitt's "Eternal Triangle." The Coltrane piece is a jam, with harmonic off-minor changes requiring teamwork from the front line and strong support from the rhythm section, provided in spades by rising star pianist Danny Grissett and the excellent drummer Eric Harland. In many respects, you could call Hound Dog Taylor a cult artist. Respected by bluesmen and critics alike, he built a small, devoted following across America simply by constently touring. There were no hits and very few covers of hs songs, but his rowdy concerts and incendiary records on Alligator convinced any who heard him. In the process, he put Alligator Records on the blues map, so it only makes sense that the label return the favor with Hound Dog Taylor: A Tribute, one of the few blues tributes that really works. Taylor's wild, careening slide guitar became one of more influential sounds in contemporary blues, as evidenced by this quality-packed record. Out of the 14 tracks, only George Thorogood's thuggish, sluggish "I Just Can't Make It" falls flat, but the quality of the remaining cuts is so high that it's forgivable. Luther Allison's "Give Me Back My Wig" rocks, Gov't Mule's "Gonna Send You Back to Georgia" is tough, Vernon Reid and Alvin Youngblood Hart do a nice acoutic reading of "It's Alright," Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin turns "See Me in the Evening" into an appealing, straightforward blues-rocker ...

Gift of Love If I were asked what the greatest gift is that I have received from someone other than immediate family members and relatives, my honest answer would be, “All the love and care that I have received from the people I have come across over the years—some of whom have become friends, and some of whom I have not ever seen again. How much has that love and care made difference in my life? Again, the simple and honest truth is that it has been a big difference in a positive and wonderful way. I will never be able to repay those who have given me so much love and care. However, in their honor and, in some cases, in their memories, I hope that I will have the opportunity to pass on to others some of the love and care they had for me. As this Christmas season approaches, I would like to start a campaign to raise funds for the children of the men and women in the U.S. Military who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of the United States. Using the music that I have written within the last couple years, I am asking for your support so that together, we may show our appreciation, love, and care to the children who unfortunately lost a parent in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
