| | Lita Ford Wicked Wonderland CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
Blood & Piss
$14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest track), "Bed," was released exclusively to Stockroom.com, one of the leading suppliers of S&M and bondage gear on the internet. Ford claims that she and her husband have carved out a path to a happy family life, and it does seem ...

| | Ted Nugent CD (1975) Remastered
Blood & Piss
$6.75 Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Ted Nugent's self-titled 1975 debut solo release is a bold expression of gonzo guitarist's sound, image, and abundant attitude. Ted had what was essentially a touring band with Amboy Dukes bassist Rob Grange, fellow Michiganite Derek St. Holmes on vocals and guitar, and Cliff Davies on drums. During days off from the mega-road trip that preceded this album, the group recorded its first record. Co-produced by famed hard-rock/metal helmsman Tom Werman, "Stranglehold" has the impromptu jamming feel of a live show.
Like "Deuce" for Kiss, the first track of a first album can define an act. "Stranglehold" leads straight into the no-holds-barred "Stormtroopin'," where the riffs are non-stop. The boogieish "Hey Baby" shows why St. Holmes was an underrated, soulful hard-rock vocalist. He howls "got me an overdose of rock & roll" on "Just What the Doctor Ordered." A wicked metal lick introduces "Snakeskin Cowboys." Ted picks his mammoth Gibson Birdland to death on "Motor City Madhouse." He switches gears on the bluesy shuffle of "You Make Me Feel Right at Home." The bonus live tracks of "Stormtroopin'," "Just What the Doctor ...
| | No Motiv And The Sadness Prevails CD (1999)
Blood & Piss
$11.79 Despite touring and label associations with punk and especially emocore artists like Get Up Kids and Saves the Day, No Motiv doesn't quite fit into either constrictive genre. At the time And the Sadness Prevails was released, the punk world was being turned on its ear by the emo movement led by backpack-wearing oh-so-sensitive fans and artists alike, hoping to twist punk's social relevance into so much middle-upper-class catharsis. All the suburban outsiders wanted their music back from the commercial punk masses so badly that they were completely willing to cry about it, and it worked, as independent emo originators garnered huge critical success while occupying sales charts without so much as a hint of mainstream radio support. Known for their slightly nerdy personal style, and other novel approaches to the punk form (like broader instrumentation that included clean guitar sounds and a smattering of keyboards,) emo bandwagoneers came scurrying out of the American quasi-underground like sad termites hoping to snack on the post-grunge cultural woodwork. California's No Motiv was often lumped into this desperate group, but generally without good reason. It's true that this debut release on legendary punk label Vagrant Records has some of the plaintive lyrics and perky hooks that define the emo genre, but any similarities No Motiv might have shared with their more plaintive contemporaries ended there. The foursome injects a rock sensibility into this 1999 release that their self-conscious punk brethren was busy avoiding at the time. And the Sadness Prevails maintains this old-fashioned intensity nicely without wandering into hardcore anti-music. Standout cuts like "The Waiting Hurt" and "Sunday at 6:00 P.M." ...
