White-boy blues somehow sounds more authentic when it's done like this: naive and punky and distorted, reveling in the history of a thousand nights in the mosh pit. Nashville's Black Diamond Heavies do it right, with nasty but sincere organ-driven howlers and stompers, and, like the Black Keys and White Stripes, a surprisingly full sound for a duo.
Photographers: Wil Rose; Bob Reuter.
Unknown Contributor Role: John Wesley Myers.
Personnel: John Wesley Myers (vocals, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Matt Rowlands (background vocals).
Recording information: Revolution Sounds, Chattanooga, TN.

Every Damn Time album
$17.99 In the late '80s, Union Carbide Productions were an essential live rock & roll experience whose on-stage theatrics made anything happening in front of the stage seem pretty tame by comparison. The underground was a very self-conscious place, where nostalgia for anything prior to the Ramones revolution wasn't as celebrated as it was when Nirvana covered the Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz." There were exceptions, of course; the Cramps were self-exiled freaks whose outrageousness (and age) gave them license to pillage the '50s freely, but not many folks were really tapped into the '60s punk shamanism vibe of the Stooges with as clean a feed as these Swedes. The early UCP recordings bear this connection out best on "Ring My Bell" and the hilarious corporate hedonism of "Financial Declaration." Later, though, as they trudged on into the '90s, they embraced ...
| | Hurt Process Heartbeat Behind CD (2005)
Every Damn Time CD music
$9.79 What makes the Hurt Process relatively unique isn't the fact that they combine emo and hardcore into a crunchy, chewy, slightly sweet confection that's sure to set the kids moshing in every pit from Atlanta to Seattle. What makes them relatively unique is that they're from the U.K., where the punk idea is usually expressed quite differently. ...
| | Marc Ford Weary And Wired CD (2007)
Every Damn Time music CDs
$13.85 The ex-Black Crowes guitarist's first solo album in five years is far more wired than weary, which is certainly a good thing. Rejoining musicians from his pre-Crows years in the band Burning Tree (bassist Mark "Muddy" Dutton and drummer Doni Gray), Ford strips down to a basic trio format, although one loose enough to allow horns, keyboards, and background singers to flesh out the sound as needed. Ford generally discards the country that informed his first disc for a deceptively simple, bluesy rocking attack that growls and roars. The opening "Featherweight Dreamland" sounds like '70s-era Stones, just over three minutes of gnarly chords meshed with tough maracas and piano driving the trashy overdubbed guitars. The disc then shifts to a Southern rock-blues sensibility (the rugged "1000 Ways") combined with a substantial Neil Young influence. The ...
| | Grinderman CD (2007)
Every Damn Time songs
$13.69 Beginning sometime in the mid-to-late 1990s, Nick Cave's output became increasingly nuanced, introspective, and even tender. While he was still capable of a snarling rocker now and again, he'd certainly mellowed ...
| | Okkervil River Stage Names CD (2007)
Every Damn Time album
$11.99 What's gotten into Okkervil River? While the band has always been basically the vehicle for the songs and musings of frontman Will Sheff, their formless approach--somewhere between indie rock, emo, and roots music--has always tended to be a too-middling, too-pensive, and an altogether too-tasteful affair. STAGE NAMES changes everything. With the mixing help of Spoon drummer and Austin producer extraordinaire Jim Eno, the Austin quintet finally unleash their inner rock animals and deliver an unhinged rock-&-roll record replete with finger snaps, swaggering riffs, and Sheff's most direct and dynamic song cycle yet.
The lead-off, "Our Life Is Not A Movie and Maybe," injects a Belle and Sebastian-esque melodic theme with a sweeping ...
| | Nick Cave Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! CD (2008) With Book
Every Damn Time CD music
$13.89 Nick Cave's 2008 album DIG, LAZARUS, DIG is a study in growing old gracefully, while still punching and kicking into that good night. Some might claim that Cave has irrevocably mellowed since his earlier days, yet one need only look to the arch, caustic musical leg-hump that was 2007's Grinderman album for evidence to the contrary. In fact, Cave's intensity hasn't lapsed in the least, it's merely evolved. DIG, LAZARUS, DIG, however, speaks to the artistry behind this evolution in attitude.
From the opening title track, the listener gets a complete picture of everything Nick Cave ...

| | John Vanderslice Life And Death Of An American Fourtracker CD (2002)
Every Damn Time album
$10.09 With three records in just two years, John Vanderslice is already proving himself to be a prolific songwriter who can put together an admirable concept record. Like Time Travel Is Lonely, The Life and Death of an American Fourtracker tells a story of solitude and, ultimately, the downfall of its protagonist. A boy obsessed with producing home recordings may not sound as sad as ...
