Tom Hanks 1996 directorial debut is released with 39 minutes of extra footage. Bonuses: bonus footage, commentary, featurettes, making-of documentary, music video, reunion. Set in the 1964 and steeped in Americana, this film chronicles the meteoric rise -- and equally quick demise -- of a music group called The Wonders. The talented musicians start out playing in neighborhood joints. That changes after they meet a shrewd record executive, who advises the boys on how to dress, act and sing. Soon their song, "That Thing You Do," hits #1, and the group is on top of the world. Unfortunately, the song is The Wonders's only hit. And that's just one reason why the group's collapse happens so quickly...
A cautionary pop fable following the meteoritic rise of "The Wonders," a fictitious foursome during the early days of pop-rock fandom. When jazz drummer Guy Patterson fills in for a session with a friend's band, a hit single is born and the smalltown boys find themselves riding a rollercoaster of success, guided by the opportunistic hand of a smooth-talking record label agent.  fun, fun, fun!
If you're looking for something as light as air, and nothing but fun, then this is your movie. The plot is predictable, if you grew up in the 60's and witnessed the phenomenon called The Beatles. Highly entertaining if you like the innocense and music of that era.

Nice New Release
This is a fave of mine and the extras included on the second disc enhanced the experience. The "Tom Hanks" cut of the film definitely adds nuance and depth to the characters, especially Hanks own Mr. White.
It's an extremely well done 10th anniversary re-issue.

A wonderfully entertaining movie about a start up band, "The One-Ders",(later changed to "The Wonders") who rose to fame on one hit song, and who's promising musical career came to a screeching halt because of the self absorbed musings of the song writer and guitarist for the band. I was reminded of the Beatles when I saw this movie. The music, characters and 60's period genre was highly entertaining.
