| | Evidence Weatherman CD (2007)
Most Underrated CD music
$12.59 Evidence, one-third of the esteemed underground rap group Dilated Peoples, makes the most of his solo debut album, The Weatherman LP. He retains the best aspect of his group efforts, the outstanding productions. But just as importantly, he ditches the most played-out aspect of Dilated Peoples, their back-to-basics conservatism in the face of changing times and trends. Consequently, The Weatherman LP is the freshest Dilated Peoples album, and certainly the most compelling from start to finish, since the good old days of Expansion Team (2001). As always, the Alchemist is a chief contributor, responsible for the beats on five of the album's 16 songs. "Letyourselfgo" is one of his strongest productions here; however, "Chase the Clouds Away" is his key contribution, the one sunny song on this otherwise stormy album. Evidence produces a few tracks himself, and Dilated Peoples colleague Babu handles a few too, most notably "A Moment in Time," which boasts some phenomenal turntable cuts. Sid Roams, Jake One, and DJ Khalil are also credited with beat-making. The productions are the highlight of ...
| | Disco Years Vol. 4: Lost In The Music CD (1992)
Most Underrated music CDs
$9.09 Dozens upon dozens of disco compilations -- some good, some bad -- have been released since Rhino dribbled out their seven-volume Disco Years series in the '90s. While several of the discs that have followed offer consistent track listings and more eye-pleasing packaging, this particular series remains one of the best available. Across seven discs, the disco phenomenon is summarized with a near-perfect balance between the universally known and the not quite as popular. Some might want to stick strictly to the pop-chart toppers, which is understandable for nostalgia's sake; however, one of the most important characteristics of this era is that the singles that failed to cross over into mainstream territory consistently rivaled -- and frequently trumped -- their gold and platinum counterparts. So, it doesn't ...

| | Anastacia Freak Of Nature CD (2001)
Most Underrated album
$7.59 Sporting the cleavage-and-bare-midriff look that's requisite early-21st century pop femme-wear, the New York-born blonde bombshell Anastacia drops her sophomore album with all the subtlety of a Pamela Anderson video. Her vocals avoid the little-girl breathlessness of a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore--instead, she projects an unmistakable earthiness and raw sexuality, notably in the album's title track and "Why'd You Lie to Me?," both of which find her in feisty mood.
Anastacia also channels Chaka Khan in the Brazilian-inflected rhythms of "Don't Cha Wanna," and shows her quieter (if no less uncompromising) side in the charming "Overdue Goodbye." With the addition of a couple of Celine Dion-style ballads ("Hold On," "I Dreamed You") that also lighten the mood, FREAK OF NATURE is a well-rounded effort.
Anastacia's sophomore outing, Freak of Nature, continues with the late-'80s bombastic funk/soul/pop revival ushered in by her debut, Not That Kind, but this time there's a few more ballads in the mix. Anastacia also leans more toward straightforward rock on this outing, while still maintaining the irresistible dance grooves that made her debut an international success. The album kicks off to a rocking start with the title track, which boasts a sinuous guitar solo reminiscent of "American Woman" and then leads into the soulful, bombastic rocker "Paid My Dues," a massive European hit. Other shining moments include the dramatic "One Day in Your Life," which follows the same formula as her previous hit, "I'm Outta Love," but better, with more soaring, epic vocals, and sounds like a rock version of a forgotten disco classic. The feel-good soul-funk vibe of "Don't Stop (Doin' It)" is a massive hit waiting to happen, and perfect for a breezy summer afternoon. When Anastacia slows down the tem
