(2 Customer Reviews)
Coming off their biggest hit in years with the 1976 album THE ROARING SILENCE (and its monster hit single a version of Springsteen's "Blinded By the Light), Manfred Mann decided to continue in the same musical direction with their next release two years later, 1978's WATCH. Present again is the synthesizer-laden pop rock with a progressive edge, but noticeably absent was another overhaul of a Springsteen tune. Still, WATCH was a big hit in the band's native England, highlighted by the top 10 UK single "Davy's on the Road Again." Also included were such other prog-pop highlights as the album-opening one-two punch of "Circles" and "Drowning on Dry Land/Fish Soup." Along with THE ROARING SILENCE, WATCH remains one of Manfred Mann's strongest releases of the '70s.

Watch album
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to the fatalism of the chain gang song "My Captain," Muddy's voice expresses entire worlds of emotion with only subtle ...
| | Manfred Mann Solar Fire CD (1973) Import
Watch CD music
$23.29 Fans of muscular progressive rock will love Solar Fire, a concept album loosely designed around cosmology. The album opens with the majestic "Father of Night, Father of Day," which has the drive and complexity of a prime King Crimson track. As unlikely as it may seem, the track was controversial in Mann's native South Africa because of the "Father of black, father of white" line, implying that apartheid might not extend to infinite space. The album moves on to the progressive rock/jazz fusion of "In the Beginning, Darkness," a swinging, even funky track that benefits from soulful vocals by Doreen Chanter and Irene Chanter of the Grove Singers. The same duo contributes to the title track, a slow piece that begins with a fairly standard rock structure and incorporates a massive progressive jam in the middle. The instrumental suite which follows is a showcase for the combination of angular, sometimes slightly dissonant guitar with fluid keyboard work, and the band rocks straight through with stately grace. Once again, one is reminded of early King ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Watch music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley ...

It will always be a mystery how a grown man can spend his life wearing a school tie and short pants and receive adulation from the heavy metal fraternity. HM followers do not tolerate a cissy, yet the hugely talented Angus Young has become something of a hero. His riff-laden fills, combined with the tough vocals of the late Bon Scott, made AC/DC one of the genre's all-time leading lights. Bordering on the lighter side of metal, songs such as 'Love Hungry Man', 'Touch Too Much' and the title track will always delight.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded at Roundhouse Studios, London, England in 1979. Originally ...

| | More Music To Watch Girls By CD (2000)

$31.45 Nearly identical in style and savor to the original, More Music to Watch Girls By is another two-disc collection of pop landmarks that may repeat much from the collections of veteran listeners, but could potentially fill out the stack of many beginners with some of the most popular vocal music of the era. This one swings slightly more, with a few well-chosen crossover chestnuts by the elder statesmen of an earlier generation: Frank Sinatra ("Somethin' Stupid," a hit with daughter Nancy), Mel Tormé ("Comin' Home Baby," which proved swing music's most ebullient voice lacked the groove necessary to carry a crossover), and Doris Day (whose cover of the girl-group "Our Time Will Come" proved surprisingly successful). Along with these come a cavalcade of familiar '60s pop hits that any fan of the era should own (and might already); "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wives and Lovers," "59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy)," "Windy," "Stoned Soul Picnic," "The 'In' Crowd," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "What a Difference a Day Makes," and ...

| | Anthony Wilson Savivity CD (2005)
Watch music CDs
$12.29 Guitarist Anthony Wilson is a particularly talented arranger-composer. He is usually heard with larger groups, so this trio outing gives listeners a rare opportunity to hear him stretch out as an improviser. The music mostly falls between hard bop and soul-jazz and tends to be laid-back and relaxed, even the rapid rendition of "All the Things You Are." The fine Los Angeles organist Joe Bagg works well with Wilson, while drummer Mark Ferber adds ...
| | Steve Heckman Live At Yoshi's CD (2005)
Watch songs
$17.09 A self-proclaimed John Coltrane acolyte -- and how many tenor saxophonists these days aren't? -- Steve Heckman's second album as a leader picks up about where his first album, With John in Mind, left off, trying to catch the 'Trane. The first three tracks, "Soul Eyes," "Equinox," and "You're a Weaver of Dreams" -- all performed by Coltrane once upon a long ago -- set out the agenda explicitly. On these tunes, occasionally Heckman manages to hint at the cry in Coltrane's tenor, yet Heckman's tone is broader, balder, not as nuanced, and that results in a heavier texture that presses down on the rhythm section. By the fourth track, "Ode to the Sunsinger" -- which has a head that radiates the vibe of its title -- Heckman switches to his own material, going back and forth between tenor and soprano saxes. Even his soprano, though, has a weighty feeling that prevents the lines from soaring. His Monk-ish "Theosphere" is about guess who -- faithful in tribute right down to his eccentric stabbing notes. The rhythm section -- pianist Matt Clark, bassist Karen Horner, drummer Jemal Ramirez -- plays it straight-ahead and competent; everybody trades off solos and breaks in traditional fashion with not very much imagination. Recorded in the friendly, terraced ambience of Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, the live sound is excellent. ~ Richard S. Ginell
