| | Dexateens Hardwire Healing CD Dexateens Discography of CDs
Three albums into their career, Tuscaloosa quartet the Dexateens have all but entirely abandoned the punk rock of their early records. Produced by the somewhat unlikely team of Sugar bassist David Barbe and Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers, Hardwire Healing is ironic in that this is certainly the least Drive-By Truckers-like album the Dexateens have yet released. This album still rocks effectively, but particularly on its second half, a newfound restraint appears. Indeed, the final third of the album is almost entirely acoustic, exploring a lower-voltage and more overtly country and blues-influenced sound than before, and it's the best the Dexateens have ever been. In particular, the surprisingly gentle ballad "Nadine," which is little more than an acoustic guitar and an emotionally strained, J Mascis-like vocal from Elliott McPherson, is one of the band's most compelling tunes, and the only marginally more arranged "Outside the Loop," built on a lazy shuffle rhythm and woozy steel guitar part, rocks just as hard as any of their punkier sides. One hesitates to use the word "mature" in this context, but where a lot of the Dexateens' retro-punky compatriots have either started the slide into self-parody or already broken up, Hardwire Healing shows a more than welcome level of progress. ~ Stewart Mason Dexateens Hardwire Healing Songs Hardwire Healing Review

Hardwire Healing songs
$7.59 SON OF SCHMILSSON was the follow-up to Harry Nilsson's most commercially successful album, NILSSON SCHMILSSON. Again produced by Richard Perry, it's a well-balanced set of semi-loopy rockers ("Take 54," "You're Breaking My Heart") and ballads, both lushly orchestrated ("Remember Christmas") and spare ("Turn On Your Radio"). The album includes the hit "Spaceman" and closes with one of the only pop songs to include the sound of gargling, "The Most Beautiful World in the World." As its predecessor does, this album enjoys a spirited sense of band interplay, which perfectly matches the material at hand. Musicians on board include the scantily pseudonym-shrouded George Harrison (George Harrysong) and Ringo Starr (Richie Snare).
Emboldened by a huge hit and hanging with Lennon and Starr, Harry Nilsson was ready to let it all go when it came time to record a follow-up to Nilsson Schmilsson. The very title of Son of Schmilsson implies that it's a de facto sequel to its smash predecessor but, as always with Nilsson, don't take everything at face value. Yes, ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record ...

ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE MUSIC.
Besides "Fire ...
