No Light Ahead music CDs
$12.05 It seems as though more and more, one-dimensional metal is becoming a thing of the past. Case in point: a band such as War from a Harlots Mouth. Just when you're ready to label the group a prog/grindcore act, abrupt detours into hardcore and even jazz territory quickly show that the group refuses to be pigeonholed to a single metallic style, as evidenced throughout their full-length debut, 2007's Transmetropolitan. And as with many newer metal acts, the group's choice of song titles appear to be equal parts stream of consciousness and wise ass humor, as evidenced by "Heeey...Let's Start a Band," "If You Want to Blame Us for Something Wrong, Please Abuse This Song!," and "How To Disconnect from Your Social Surrounding in Half an Hour." And musically, ...
| | Animosity Animal CD (2007)
No Light Ahead songs
$9.69 Animosity's 2007 release, Animal, is certainly an aptly titled one, as it proves to be one heck of a ferocious beast from the get-go. Uncertain if they want to be a death metal or hardcore metal band, the group has no problem aligning themselves equally with both genres, resulting in a sonic stew loaded with metronome-perfect drumming, rapid-fire riffs, and vocals that alternate between growls (à la death metal) and screamed (à la hardcore). And the complexity of this metallic noise may even result in grabbing the attention of certain prog metal heads. Supposedly, the album is somewhat of a concept album, as its lyrics ...

| | Artie Shaw At The Hollywood Palladium CD (1997)
No Light Ahead music CDs
$13.39 Although there are many releases featuring radio broadcasts from Artie Shaw's very popular 1939 orchestra, relatively few exist from his next two bands, the outfits from 1940 and 1941. This particular recording shows just how creative the writing was for his string orchestras. Billy Butterfield, Hot Lips Page, Jack Jenney and Georgie Auld are among the many soloists, and there is one rare small-group live version of "Dr. Livingstone I Presume." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Air Supply Now & Forever CD (1982) Import
No Light Ahead songs
$9.79 Now and Forever was Air Supply's last platinum album in America. Like all of the duo's albums, it has an uneven selection of material; the best songs were the singles -- "Even the Nights Are Better" and "Two Less Lonely People in the World." Even when the group performs weak material, they sound fine, but the lack of first-rate songs became disheartening after a while. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Now and Forever was Air Supply's last platinum album in America. Like all of the duo's albums, the best songs were the singles -- "Even the Nights Are Better" and "Two Less Lonely People in the World" -- but the duo delivers the weaker material convincingly, making the album enjoyable for dedicated fans of the group. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Andre Afram Asmar Racetothebottom CD (2002)
No Light Ahead album
$10.59 The soi-disant mugician brings more global communication in this worldly-wise follow up to his self-released debut, Zombeats. Though the creaking signage and watery vocal that opens Asmar's sophomore album slots right into place at new label Mush, having much in common with hip-hop corrupters Dose One and Boom Bip, it is subsonic rumbles of dub bass rather than quick-witted lyrics that make up the keystones to this particular body of work. As likely to feature a distant cry of a muezzin as it is the tolling of high noon in a dusty Western, Asmar is well-versed in the dark arts of sonic collusion, forever ...

| | FM Bats Everybody Out... Shark In The Water CD (2005)
No Light Ahead songs
$9.55 It's odd to have ten minutes to get your sound across, but FM Bats want to make the most of these seven songs. "18 Is Dying" begins like a punk tune but singer Todd Jacobs gives it a bluesy feel that brings to mind bands like the Black Keys and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. After 30 seconds it blossoms into quasi-garage rock that ebbs and flows nicely. The number that is perhaps the most fleshed-out song has to be "All You Do Is Jerk," which sounds somewhat like the Strokes if playing underneath famed New York nightclub CBGB's. Minimal but with a primal percussion that is quite infectious, guitarist Orlando Sanchez weaves some fine licks throughout. A heavy yet quirky track is also the best here as "Young Man's Glory, Old Man's Blues" veers somewhere between Violent Femmes and early British metal acts like Black Sabbath. "There's Only 1 Captain on This Ship!" is perhaps the coda to the prior track, fading in before gracefully fading out. Jacobs sneers and snarls on the elementary indie rock flavor of "Cat ...
