(1 Customer Review)
Whether due to his warm-hearted, almost androgynous vocals or to the simple fact that cynics resent any musician that records anything past 1979, perennial reggae icon Barrington Levy has never reached the sort of crossover Marley-dom that some of his peers enjoy. However, with such a striking piece of stress-free ability so early in his career, historical concerns like these should probably be abolished. Most of Englishman finds Levy in a supernaturally relaxed state of mind, vocalizing an alluring range of sentiment, intelligence, and ghetto patois that more than keep up with the eclectic production hands of Henry "Junjo" Lawes. "Bend Your Back" is pure dancehall geniality (with an affecting rhythm perhaps closer to American blues than anything else), "Look Girl" is disco-reggae merriment, and better still, "Sister Carol" is the kind of song that will quite possibly continue to break hearts forever. Some occasional lapses into failed modernization do put a crimp on things, but this is the sort of album that instantly befriends and immediately signals an important talent. In Levy's own words, this is nothing less than "sweet reggae music." ~ Dean CarlsonThe Wire (p.71) - "He caught the spirit of the times perfectly with his fresh vocals on rhythms from The Roots Radics, here with their original drummer..." The Beat (Magazine) (p.13) - "ENGLISHMAN is one of his earliest and best....A nice reminder of what Barrington sounded like as a youth on the move." Englishman album
$14.79 One of the crucial albums of the 1970s, Johnny Clarke delivers up a masterpiece in a mere 12 tracks. Produced by Bunny Lee, at the height of his "flying cymbals" work, Rockers Time Now, contrary to its title, doesn't so much rock as find the perfect lackadaisical groove, and slides along it into nirvana. If the Jamaican term "irae" had a musical personification, Rockers would be it. Clarke's own laid back, unruffled delivery dovetails perfectly, and Lee's equally easy going houseband The Aggrovators were the perfect music complement. Several of the songs are covers that on paper seem to be recipes for disaster, like The Abyssinians' militant "Declaration Of Rights." But miraculously it works brilliantly, as if the revolution had come without bloodshed, with Babylon brought to ruins by a haze of ganja smoke. That haze swirls around "Satta Massa Gana" as well, conjuring up a dream world Africa, an exquisite paradise far removed from the real world. However, Rockers isn't all wrapped in mists, "Ites Green And Gold" is actually pretty punchy, ...
| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Englishman CD music
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone ...
| | Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD (1973) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Englishman music CDs
$13.15 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight ...

RADIO CITY recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in the Fall of 1973. Originally released on Ardent in 1974.
Big Star can be ranked alongside the Velvet Underground and the Sex Pistols as one of the major inspirations for the indie and alternative rock movements. The group's first two albums, collected here on one disc, have influenced everyone from R.E.M. to Teenage Fanclub to the Replacements to Nirvana. Their debut, #1 RECORD, combined the melodiousness and perfectly arranged feel of the mid-period Beatles with the raw rock kick of the early Kinks and the jangly country-rock beauty of the Byrds. "Feel," "Don't Lie To Me," and "When My Baby's Beside Me" feature stinging guitar licks, punchy rhythms, and hooks galore, and sound like someone discovering rock & roll for the first time. Alex Chilton's "Give Me Another Chance" and Chris Bell's "Try Again," on the other ...

| | Abyssinians Tree Of Satta CD (2003)
Englishman music CDs
$14.65 The Abyssinians cut the original version of "Satta Massa Gana" in 1969 at Clement Dodd's legendary Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica. This first "Satta" featured a lead vocal by Bernard Collins, a distinctive bassline played by Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones, and a simple but effective horn chart voiced by Headley Bennett on alto sax and Vin Gordon on trombone. The song was a big hit in the dancehalls of the day, and before long new versions and dub plates of "Satta" began to appear. In time, the "Satta" rhythm became one of the most versioned in Jamaican history, with over 450 known variations to date. Britain's fine reggae reissue label Blood and Fire has collected several of these musical offspring, along with the original Abyssinians version, in a single package that chronicles Jamaica's obsession with this timeless groove. Collins revisits "Satta" a couple of times himself, with reworked lyrics, as "Satta Me No Born Yah" and "Satta Don." U-Roy preaches Psalm 1 over the rhythm as "Blessed," while Big Youth toasts Psalm 2 over it as "I Pray Thee." Lloyd Charmers of the Uniques is featured with an organ rendition called "Charming Version," while Tommy McCook adds tenor sax and ...
