An FBI woman needs a killer called Hannibal the Cannibal to catch a killer called Buffalo Bill. Oscars for best picture, director Jonathan Demme, actor Hopkins, actress Foster. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins will likely be forever associated with their roles in this bone-chilling masterpiece, based on the novel by Thomas Harris and directed by Jonathan Demme. FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Foster) is sent by her supervisor (Scott Glenn) to interview ferociously intelligent serial killer Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lechter (Hopkins) at his cell in a Maryland mental hospital. The FBI hopes Lechter can provide insight into the mind of killer-at-large, Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), whose current abductee happens to be the daughter of a senator. Intrigued by Clairice, Lechter demands information about her personal life and in exchange for clues, and the two begin to form a strangely intimate connection, with a girl's life hanging in the balance. Starling is gradually revealed as a woman struggling out of her own darkness, bound to aid the dysfunctional males around her on their own paths of transformation, liberation, and destruction. This is a film of brilliant and disturbing beauty that transcends its B-movie origins (though it does honor them with a cameo appearance by Roger Corman). Its enduring influence has led to a slew of similarly dark-toned serial killer films, and a sequel, HANNIBAL (2001). Theatrical release: February 13, 1991.
Filmed on location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC.
Shooting began on November 15, 1989, and wrapped on March 1, 1990.
Estimated budget: $19 million.
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is number 65 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies.
To perfect the voice of Hannibal, Anthony Hopkins based his speech on the dry voice of the Hal 9000 computer from 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
Hopkins won the Best Actor Oscar despite being in the film for no more than 30 minutes, the shortest screen appearance for any Best Actor winner.
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS actually features the second screen appearance of Hannibal Lecter. Played by Brian Cox, the character first appears in Michael Mann's MANHUNTER, which is based on the Thomas Harris novel RED DRAGON.
Roger Corman plays FBI Director Hayden Burke in the film.
Demme regular Charles Napier plays Boyle.
Chris Isaak appears briefly as a SWAT commander.
Try to catch how many times Anthony Hopkins blinks in various scenes....
The sequel, HANNIBAL, opened on February 9, 2001. Ridley Scott took over the direction, and Julianne Moore played Clarice Starling instead of Jodie Foster. Hopkins again played Hannibal, deliciously. Silence Of The Lambs Quotes/Excerpts: "Believe me, you don't want Hannibal Lecter inside your head."--Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn)
"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."--Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins); the classic sucking sound Hopkins made after this line was ad-libbed
"I do wish we could chat a little longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner."--Hannibal Lecter
Silence Of The Lambs Reviews: "LAMBS remains a great film. A groundbreaking film." -- Grade: A
-- Jeff Labrecque, Entertainment Weekly "...Hopkins' performance may be the film's bravura showpiece, but Foster's goes the whole distance, steadfast, controlled, heartbreakingly insightful, a fine addition to her gallery of characterizations..."
-- Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times "Hopkins's portrayal of the world's most urbane serial killer is a wonder of both actorly invention and villainous instinct."
-- Premiere Staff, Premiere 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]till the definitive upmarket serial killer thriller, achieving the almost unprecedented feat of winning all five major Oscar categories..."
-- Stephen Dalton, Uncut 5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] rare horror that transcends the genre and has arguably become a modern classic."-- Simon Edwards, Ultimate DVD "...Superbly crafted....THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS slams you like a sudden blast of bone-chilling, pulse-pounding terror..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...A sombre masterpiece....The film creates a world drained of light, counterpointed by a sinister and unsettling score..."
-- Lizzie Francke, Sight and Sound "...[A] superbly crafted, unsettling movie....Demme pumps up the tension to a deafening din..." -- 4 out of 4 stars

One of the BEST movies of all time If I were asked to provide a vote of my top (3) favorite movies, Silence of the Lambs would be number (1). EVERYONE gave an OSCAR winning performance, as far as I'm concerned. I've seen it numerous times and will continue to see it again and again. This purchase was actually for my brother who has an extensive DVD library, however, he loaned this one to a "friend" & was never returned. CLASSIC HORROR FILM Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins deliver knockout performances in this classic film which earned many Academy Awards, including Best Picture. A film with great timing, chilling moments and unbelievable performances, Silence of the Lambs is a movie which will please audiences who enjoy the art of cinema. Anthony Hopkins made a perfect Hannibal Lector and he quotes some of the most famous movie lines in history. This film goes beyond the horror genre and deals with psychological suspense and sexual games from Hopkins to Foster wanting to get inside her head. Foster, who plays an FBI agent named Clarice Starling, is sent to interview Lector in order to get information on a serial killer named Buffalo Bill. Lector feels sexually attracted to Clarice and tries to counter her attack and get inside her head with different mind games and seeking to get information on her own troubling personal life. The Silence of the Lambs is a film which has become so popular in modern culture and is impersonated to this very day. A thrilling film with great dialogue and magnificent moments, The Silence of the Lambs will always live up to be a classic. The sequels which have come out over the past few years don't even come close to this classic original. I advice this DVD highly. Submitted by Joey 34 (L.A California) Was This Review Helpful? Silence Of The Lambs DVD
$16.29 After a decade in abeyance, the courtly cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, returns to the screen, again played by Anthony Hopkins, under the direction of Ridley Scott. When F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) is blamed for a botched drug bust, her boss Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) makes a media circus of her humiliation, which catches the attention of Lecter. Now a hardened veteran, she begins receiving letters from the twisted genius, who remains obsessed with her. Yet she's not the only one interested in drawing out the psychopath, now lecturing on the Renaissance in Florence. Italian detective Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) hopes to impress his young wife by nailing the reward for his capture, and wealthy pedophile Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) is eager to take revenge against the cannibal for leaving him with a hideously deformed face. But they're no match for Hannibal's coyly satanic ubiquity, which bewilders his quickly narcotized foes before he administers a punishment sufficiently grotesque to suit his sense of amusement. The odious Krendler, in particular, learns to use his gray matter for, perhaps, the first time in his life. However, all is prologue to his fated rendezvous with Clarice. A banquet for the splatterati, reveling as it does in gore and dismemberment, the film features brilliant work by a stellar cast, and the kind of meticulous art direction and lushly magnificent photography that one has come to expect of one of Scott.
Seven years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) escaped from custody, seven years since FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) interviewed him in a maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. The doctor is now at large in Europe, pursuing his own interests, savoring the scents, the essences of an unguarded world. But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with Dr. Lecter--his seldom-used voice still haunts her dreams. Mason Verger remembers Dr. Lecter, too, and is obsessed with revenge.

Silence Of The Lambs movie DVD
$31.29 Director Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, THE ROCK) uses a tragic romantic triangle to set the stage for the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in this epic tale of love, loss, and patriotism. When Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), a beautiful Navy nurse, meets dashing ace Army fighter pilot Rafe (Ben Affleck), the two fall madly in love, only to be separated abruptly when he is called upon to help fight the war in Europe. Unforeseen circumstances lead Evelyn into the arms of Danny (Josh Hartnett), another fighter pilot and Rafe's best friend since childhood. In the meantime, the Japanese military is planning the surprise early morning raid on Hawaii that will pull the United States into World War II. Spectacular special effects vividly recreate the attack in devastating detail as bombs explode, torpedoes shoot through the water, and bullets fly, shaking tranquil Pearl Harbor to its core. Bay deftly captures the patriotism and the loss of innocence of the young men and women who were suddenly thrust into the war. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jon Voight, Alec Baldwin and Mako also star in this tribute to both the fallen and the survivors of one of the most horrific tragedies ever to occur on American soil.

| | Kino-Eye/Three Songs Of Lenin DVD (1924)
Silence Of The Lambs review
$19.55 This collection of the shorter works of Russian film pioneer Dziga Vertov is no less revolutionary or captivating for its short-form construction. Expanding upon the breathtaking and visionary exalted realism of MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA, Vertov approaches both history and the future in these enthusiastic films. KINO-EYE takes its name from the philosophy coined by Vertov and his fellow film explorers in their attempts to create a pure cinema in opposition to what they viewed as corrupt capitalist fiction films. A soviet village erupts through the screen, teeming with revolutionary energy and idealistic fervor as Vertov utilizes his signature fast-cut editing and such handmade special effects as reverse action and slow motion in order to evoke the spirit and ideals lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. THREE SONGS OF LENIN unfurls like an elaborated newsreel, portraying Lenin and his utopian vision of the Russian state through three "songs," or episodes. Like a visual time capsule of a people's enthusiasms and hopes, THREE SONGS OF LENIN distills Vertov's triumphant aesthetic and political desires. Vertov's inventive technique and poetic vision create a transcendent vision of people and history through montage and a lyrical and thoroughly fresh take on narrative that still resonates in the 21st Century.
