During his period on Columbia, Maynard Ferguson showed a willingness (and sometimes even an eagerness) to record pop material. His trumpet playing is frequently brilliant throughout this LP with his English orchestra, but not too many jazz purists will be thrilled with his renditions of "Theme from Shaft," "Spinning Wheel," and "Hey Jude." The music is actually better than it seems, but do not look here for any bop. ~ Scott Yanow

Back to the 70's It is great to hear the old tunes like Hey Jude that Maynard commonly did in the 70's. Taking the pop hits of the day and, with great arrangements and his wonderful bands, putting the jazz touch on them. I have been waiting for these cd's to be released for many years, as the old 33 1/3 albums have been put away. I purchased them all, MF Horn(1) through MF Vl and enjoy the trip back to my youth. Mr. Ferguson recently passed away (8/2006)and so the only way to hear him now is on these discs. Submitted by SWorobey (Bridgewater, MA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful.

At the age of 10 years, his parents invested in a Harmony electric hollow body with matching amplifier. As a youngster, he was influenced by ...
