Critics unofficially dubbed Translator's fourth and final effort their "arena rock" album when it landed, which is fair, but that it's much more Rumours than Love Gun should also be noted. Big production by Ed Stasium and ambitious songs from Steve Barton (the Paul Westerberg of the group) and Robert Darlington (the George Harrison) plus a sense that solo careers are itching to get out all add up to a sprawling, overwhelming effort from bandmembers who haven't quite figured out how to reconcile their college radio upbringing and the Fleetwood Mac-sized world they are entering. Guitar solos feel more like machismo than mayhem with Stasium at the controls, songwriting has dipped a little overall, and there is less of a "band" feeling than ever. Still, "Standing in Line" and "I Need You to Love" are both top-shelf, and the title track suggests that this bigger Translator would have worked had they held on for another album. Since the handful of highlights have appeared on the well-chosen comps Everywhere That I'm Not and Everywhere That We Were, only the hardcore fan need worry about this interesting misstep. ~ David Jeffries
Translator: Robert Darlington, Steve Barton (vocals, guitar); Larry Dekker (bass guitar); David Scheff (drums).
Evening Of The Harvest Music Translator Evening Of The Harvest Songs Evening Of The Harvest Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Translator Go Out On A High Note On Translator's final album, the band records songs w/a more "live" feel and create an album that rocks harder than anything since their debut "Heartbeats and Triggers". Although there are a couple of mediocre songs the high points ("Need You To Love", "Evening of the Harvest", "Winter Crying" etc) are pretty damn amazing.
Steve Barton's vocals are sublime throughout, moving from a whisper to a scream sometimes in one line, delivering the lyrics with an authentic sense of urgency.
Good, good stuff. Submitted by davidcrouse (Fairbanks, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Topical Songwriting Translator's final album is alot like their debut in that it's a mixture of standout songs and average ones, while the 2nd & 3rd records are strong all the way thru. The biggest difference with this album is the topical nature of the songs, which is logical extension of the more mature songs found on the 3rd record ("Translator"). The most interesting bonus track (on all four records) is "Ronnie Raygun Blues," which they often played in concert.
My advice is the order this quickly, as it is likely to go out of print after the first pressing. Submitted by Ricardo (Austin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Evening Of The Harvest album
$10.39 Collectables combined Guadalcanal Diary's first two albums -- 1984's Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man and 1986's Jamboree, both originally released on Elektra -- for this 2003 release. The first album, produced with a small budget by Don Dixon, helped establish them as a cult group, while the second -- produced mostly by Rodney Mills, with a couple songs produced by Steve Nye -- laid the foundation for 2X4, their third and best album. While 2X4 was easily the group's apex, the two albums on this disc are hardly baby steps, and some devout fans even view them as their favorites. Though the group strikes a strong resemblance to peers R.E.M., Murray Attaway's unique songwriting is enough to make the musical similarities ...

| | Warren Zevon Stand In The Fire CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Evening Of The Harvest album
$9.59 In an era of wishy-washy singer-songwriters, Zevon immediately stood out as a wild card, a singer unafraid of the heat in kitchen. His first albums revealed a gifted songwriter equally comfortable with heroin-based love songs and manic rockers rife with gunplay. With STAND IN THE FIRE however, he leaps into the flames with headlong abandon. Backed by a band of unknowns, Zevon embraces the spontaneous frenzy of what live performances aspire to but rarely achieve. The band pushes Zevon towards the edge of losing control and he answers every lick with crazed purpose.
He throws in marvelously extemporaneous lyrics during "Werewolves of London," screaming bloodlust while calling for the head of James Taylor. Mayhem reaches an apex during a pounding "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me," in which he actually threatens to kill the audience if they don't dance. There is no real threat of bodily harm while listening in the comfort of your own home, though the urge to light fires and empty ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Evening Of The Harvest CD music
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's ...
