Translator scored a college-radio hit in the early 1980s with their catchy, bare-bones "Everywhere That I'm Not" from HEARTBEATS AND TRIGGERS and then got swept aside even in that small arena by the success of flashier or more eccentric bands like REM. It's a shame, because this 1983 follow-up--out of print for many years and reissued by Wounded Bird in 2007--is a gorgeous exercise in jangly, intelligent pop music. The melodies soar, supporting life-affirming lyrics--the title track and the rousing "Un-Alone" should have been huge hits.
Translator: Robert Darlington, Steve Barton (vocals, guitar); Larry Dekker (bass guitar); David Scheff (drums).
Additional personnel: Beverly Wieselman (spoken vocals); Douglas Wieselman, Benjamin Bossi (saxophone).
Translator No Time Like Now Songs No Time Like Now Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Not Their Best But Still Great Of the four Translator albums recently reissued on cd, this is the one I listen to least often. Although it has some great songs ("Unalone," "Beyond Today") it also has a little more filler than the other three albums ("LA LA" for example).
Still, it's a great album with very diverse song styles. Yes, every song sounds different than the one before it.
However, I think "Heartbeats & Triggers", "Translator," and "Evening of the Harvest," are much stronger, more cohesive, and more immediate. Submitted by davidcrouse (Fairbanks, Alaska) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Their Best Record This is Translator's best record for many reason:
1. Not a bad song in the bunch
2. Contains the widest variety of musical styles.(don't you hate it when every song sounds same!?)
It's a shame they couldn't continue the momentum from their debut record and only hit single ("Everywhere That I'm Not'). To my knoweldge, this is the first time that this record has come out on cd. Because many reissued/remastered cd's only go thru one pressing, I suggest you order this pronto, before it goes out of print. Submitted by Ricardo (Austin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects ...

Few debut singles in the history of rock & roll have had the immediate and overwhelming impact of The Byrds' version of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Marrying a Beatles-like electric jangle to Dylan's insight and folky melody (in many ways, breaking Dylan into the pop market), it not only forecast the band's influence on the future of pop music but reestablished an American rock & roll presence in the face of the British Invasion. The album of the same name, released in June of 1965, was a shotgun blast before the canon roar that Dylan's HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED (released just two months later) would become.
As much as Bob Dylan was an overwhelming influence on the young Byrds--four of the twelve tracks on MR. TAMBOURINE MAN were Dylan songs--his contributions were only a part of what made the band special. The chiming sound of McGuinn's 12-string guitar was the group's backbone, characterizing The Byrds' presence in a way few rock instrumentalists had done until then. Gene Clark proved to be a mighty songwriter in his own right--"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" has stood the test of time better than any other track here. Yet, what distinguished The Byrds and MR. TAMBOURINE MAN most was that they couldn't be easily pigeonholed. Combining disparate musical backgrounds and openly reconstructing everything from a British wartime standard ("We'll Meet Again") to a Jackie DeShannon pop tune ("Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe") in their own open-minded image, the Byrds kicked down the door to a new sound called folk-rock. Many would soon follow.
One of the greatest debuts in the history of rock, the Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man was nothing less than a significant step in the evolution of rock & roll itself, demonstrating ...
