| | Peter C Barenbregge Thousand Eyes CD Peter C Barenbregge Discography of CDs
Saxophonist Pete Barenbregge and drummer Frank Russo proved themselves with two earlier CDs for Summit, but they detour into fusion and Latin jazz with less impressive results. Most of the originals on this session lack any distinctive qualities that make them stand out. Electric bassist Tom Williams' rather generic smooth jazz vehicle "Flashback" sounds like it could have appeared on any of a number of bland GRP CDs of the late '80s or early '90s, while he has better luck with his upbeat treatment of the Beatles' "Blackbird." The best bet for earlier fans of Barenbregge and Russo is their breezy Latin arrangement of the standard "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." The result is that this may open doors to a new audience for these talented musicians, though their venture into fusion/smooth jazz will be disappointing to their established fan base. ~ Ken DrydenJazzTimes (p.114) - "Most of the songs glide with an easy-rolling, percussion-based vibe, embellished with some jovial solos." Thousand Eyes
$12.29 Praiseworthy as this double CD is for beefing up the skimpy number of releases available from these two artists, the fact remains that the performances resurrected here are unremarkable. An accomplished saxophonist and trumpet player, Ira Sullivan has generally shunned the spotlight. He is probably best known for his association with trumpeter Red Rodney. Luis Gasca, a journeyman trumpet player who has paid dues with Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton, and Mongo Santamaria, may be most ...

| | Jim Pearce Never Open With A Ballad CD (2007)
Thousand Eyes
$12.69 "Itâs hard for a jazz musician to garner recognition in an era of music industry indifference toward unknown artistsâand the genre as a whole. Musicians like Jim Pearce forge ahead anyway, producing uncompromised, original music. Never Open with a Ballad is a well-conceived showcase for the multi-talented Atlanta-based pianist, vocalist and composer. Pearce delves into the piano with outstanding technique and a firm modern jazz conception. The beauty of Never Open with a Ballad, however, lies in Pearceâs composing. Covering an impressive array of grooves, his tunes combine hip changes, strong melodies and, refreshingly, a sense of humor. From the progressive nature of the brooding âNot This Not That,â the slippery 3/4 bounce of âSpectacular Orange Array,â the lively propulsion of âCleeboâs Sambaâ and the bebop twists of âDebbie Marie,â Pearce presents well-developed themes that swing hard. âClouded Canyon,â the closing track, stands out as the least swinging of all, yet is a beautiful, contemplative solo piano performance. Pearce is more than willing to let the members of his ensemble, especially trumpeter Joe Gransden and saxophonist Eric South, take center stage throughout the session. Gransden patiently manipulates the middle range on âBarely Touching,â a harmonically clustered ballad with an overtly lush melody, and displays well conceived bebop lines on âCleeboâs Samba.â South has a smooth tone with just the right amount of aggression to match the eclectic nature of Pearceâs music. His gutsy tenor breathes life into the title track, and his solo excursions on âMore and More and Moreâ and âLeft Coastâ are ...
