| | Erik Wollo Emotional Landscapes CD (2003)
Elevations
$10.55 This is a lovely set of highly moving ambient pieces with shades of rock, jazz, and classical thrown in for good measure. A veritable one-man show, Erik Wollo plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as synthesizers, and he also composes, arranges, produces, and programs. "Metaphor" features spooky interplay between weeping electric guitar and lonely gusts of wind, while "Prism" sounds like a typewriter struggling to compose underwater. Though some of the pieces are dissonant and reminiscent of space music, they aren't cold or distant, rather they contain plenty of emotional, melancholic elements. "Sounds of the Seen" begins with pretty cello melodies (courtesy of guest Liv Frengstad) that grow into complicated electronic passages until they vanish into crowd noises (which were recorded at the World Trade Center just days before the September 11th attacks). ...

| | Rough Guide To Boogaloo: Cuban Salsa Dance With New York Attitude CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Elevations
$14.69 Since it's the first widely available CD compilation to focus on the boogaloo, Rough Guide to Boogaloo shouldn't be faulted too much for its oddly superior tone when dealing with such a populist genre. Lighting up the streets of Spanish Harlem during the late '60s, the boogaloo was a supremely infectious merger of Latin, popcorn soul, and rock. It had all the ingredients for a commercial juggernaut, and by all rights it should have ruled the pop charts for at least a few months. (And why it didn't needs more space than could be provided here.) Although nearly every Latin artist based around New York recorded at least one boogaloo during the late '60s and early '70s, it flourished most in the hands of younger artists, as well as those already based in commercial pop or jazz. While the Rough Guide primer includes several top-drawer jams, it wastes precious space by giving two performances each to a trio of Latin heavyweights (Tito Puente, Ismael Rivera, and Fania All-Stars, plus one from Celia Cruz) who recorded boogaloos in the same way that Fats Domino recorded the odd Beatles number during the late '60s -- to capitalize on the commercial success of a style that they had, in large part, been a prime influence on. But other than Joe Cuba, Ray Barretto, and Bobby Valentin, most of the prime boogaloo names are absent from this disc; no Joe Bataan or Johnny Colon, no Willie Bobo, Harvey Averne, or Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz, not even a Tom & Jerry-O nugget to lighten the proceedings. The impression is that the pop end of the boogaloo fad doesn't qualify as serious music for a survey such as this; perhaps instead of "limiting" the scope to Spanish Harlem, Rough Guide should've investigated the rural roots of the boogaloo in, say, Scarsdale? A few highlights finally crop up toward the end of the disc, including Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It" (one of the best boogaloos ever), along with Ray Barretto's killer soul shot "A Deeper Shade of Soul" and an early song from salsa innovator Willie Colón. ~ John Bush

| | Bunny Berigan/Bunny Berigan & His Boys CD (2006)
Elevations
$11.59 This set from Collectables Records combines the LPs Bunny, originally released in 1959 on Camden Records, and Bunny Berigan and His Boys, originally released in 1960 by Epic Records, on one disc. Both of the LPs were drawn from mono 78s Berigan cut in the '30s, so the sound reflects the source and there is a fair amount of needle wear and noise on a few of the tracks. That said, this reissue works fairly well as an introduction to Berigan's work as a bandleader, although there is obviously a whole lot more to the story. As if to make his best-known piece, "I Can't Get Started," particularly ironic, Bunny Berigan's heavy drinking and fast-paced lifestyle cut his life short in 1942 when he was only 33 years old, and all told, the swing trumpeter's recorded legacy doesn't even span a decade. Still, his incredible range on the instrument and his always beautiful tone have given him a deserved spot as one of the greatest trumpet players in the history of jazz. A small part of that legacy is here. ~ Steve Leggett
