Qui A Merite Ca album
$11.49 Part of Van Morrison's living-in-the-country-and-taking-life-easy series of early-1970s albums, TUPELO HONEY is full of the organic mix of soul, folk, blues, and rock that was his signature sound at the time. The freewheeling "Wild Night" bursts at the seams with the pure joy of living, carried along by R&B horns and Morrison's own soulful invocations. "Old Old Woodstock" and the title track are songs of devotion to home and hearth, indicative of the mood prevailing at the time, as the acid-rock excesses of the '60s gave way to a more down-home sound à la the Band, CSNY, et al. Nevertheless, even though he spent some time with his feet up in front of the fireplace, Morrison was always too much of a soul man at heart to remain low-key for long, as evidenced by the up-tempo closing tune, "Moonshine Whiskey."
Tupelo Honey is typical of Van Morrison's early-'70s work in both sound and structure; after dispensing with the requisite hit -- here, the buoyant, R&B-inflected "Wild Night" -- he truly gets down to business, settling into a luminously pastoral drift typified by the nostalgic "Old Old Woodstock." At the heart of the record are a pair of stunning love songs, "You're My Woman" and the hymn-like title cut, one of Morrison's most enduring and transcendent compositions. [As part of a massive remastering and reissue campaign, virtually every major Morrison title (and many minor ones) were reissued, like Tupelo Honey, with a pair of bonus cuts. These include a much longer alternative take of "Wild Night" (where you get a lot more Ronnie Montrose ...

Qui A Merite Ca music CDs
$9.89 The king of vocalese (the putting of words to pre-existing jazz instrumentals) further cemented his reputation with this fine 1961 Riverside date. Eddie Jefferson truly approached his singing with the mind of a horn player, paying particular attention to phrasing, and the form and rhythmic cadence of his applied lyrics. The result was a fun, technically intriguing take on jazz that was refreshing while also paying homage to the original tunes.
LETTERS FROM HOME features compositions by, among others, Duke Ellington ("Take the 'A' Train"), Charlie Parker ("Billie's Bounce"), and Dizzy Gillespie ("A Night in Tunisia"). Each of these cuts shine with Jefferson's unique, bop-inflected singing, but the vocalist also makes room for Johnny Griffin's tenor sax and the alto work of James Moody on some lovely instrumental solos as well.
Originally released on Riverside (9411).
Personnel includes: Ernie Wilkins (arranger, conductor), Eddie Jefferson, Clark Terry, Ernie Royal, Jimmy Cleveland, James Moody, Johnny Griffin, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, Wynton Kelly and Joe Newman.
Personnel: Eddie Jefferson (vocals); Eddie Jefferson; Sam Jones (bass instrument); ...

| | Delbert Mcclinton Live CDs (2003)
Qui A Merite Ca album
$13.39 The best way to experience Delbert McClinton's rowdy roadhouse combination of blues, roots rock, R&B, country, and Tex-Mex is on-stage with a couple of hundred other fans on a Saturday night. In that spirit, McClinton's second live album, and first since 1989's Live from Austin, documents a single 2003 performance at Norway's Bergen Blues Festival. Originally intended only as a radio broadcast, this is an unpolished example of a typical show. Although it shares five songs with its single-disc predecessor, Live features McClinton weaving newer material in with hits he's been playing for decades, such as "B-Movie Boxcar Blues," "Giving It Up for Your Love," and "Going Back to Louisiana." McClinton's in terrific voice and spirits throughout, and his seven-piece band (including two horns) is tight but loose and ragged enough to grind through rockers with garage band enthusiasm. "Rebecca, Rebecca," the album's slow blues showcase, proves how comfortable McClinton is with his band and being on-stage. This is clearly his forte, and even though he's released some terrific, if not quite classic, studio albums, this is the best way to get an overall dose of his talents. The career-spanning set list isn't a greatest-hits collection, but that just makes it more enjoyable as the singer throws in a few curve balls. His much-lauded harmonica skills are also on display during a knockout version of "I Want to Thank You Baby," but it's on the following eight-minute version of "I Want to Love You" where he and the band stretch out. The only disappointment is the relatively short playing time; a double CD should have been twice as long, and if just one tune were left off, this could have been released as a single disc. Otherwise, this is a nearly perfect document of Delbert ...
