On the strength of her 2003 debut, WHAT TO DO WITH DAYLIGHT, Brooke Fraser became one of New Zealand's top-selling artists of all time. Given the massive commercial success of her first effort, expectations were high for ALBERTINE, its follow-up. The album is reflective, intimate, and filled with fine songwriting. Fraser shares musical territory with such American adult alternative singer-songwriters as Norah Jones and Tori Amos, and her impressive voice and skills as a tunesmith indicate she might soon be sharing space on the charts with them. "Shadowfeet," "Deciphering Me," and "Love is Waiting" are among the highlights.
2007 sophomore album from one of New Zealand's great young singer/songwriter's. Recorded in LA with producer Marshall Altman, engineer Joe Zook and a stellar line-up of the world's finest musicians, Albertine delivers 12 gorgeous gems, stamped with an air of new found maturity and worldliness. Featuring the single 'Deciphering Me', this is immaculately crafted pop that will stand the test of time for all the right reasons. Sony/BMG.

Albertine songs
$11.39 As its name implies, Austin, TX-based retro trio Hot Club of Cowtown attempts to be a cross between Django Reinhardt's Quintet of the Hot Club of France and Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, playing stripped-down Western swing in an acoustic jazz style using just violin, guitar, and bass. On record, the band's repertoire has reflected its hybrid taste, though 2002's Ghost Train contained a complement of originals by principals Elana Fremerman (violin) and Whit Smith (guitar). (The bass-playing third member has changed during the trio's history; here it is Jake Erwin.) The band's approach is one that practically begs for a live recording, and on this one, captured at the Continental Club in Austin on May 10-12, 2003, the Hot Club of Cowtown demonstrates that it is not running out of ideas for old songs; of the 14 selections, all of them covers, only three have been on the group's previous albums. It's no surprise that they cast back to the first half of the 20th ...
| | Daniel Johnston Why Me? Live Volksbuhne Am Rosa Luxemburg-Platz 6/6/99 CD (2000) Import
Albertine album
$16.85 When Daniel Johnston first appeared on the scene in 1981 with Hi, How Are You, he was welcomed by the alternative rock community as the ultimate outsider -- at least in the U.S. He was the Howard Finster of music long before Beck even owned a guitar and learned how to milk being a geek for all it was worth. But as the years passed, Johnston proved to be an outsider whose songs, as prolific and profound as they were, couldn't support the fragile psyche of their creator. Each bit of progress was greeted with a new breakdown or another complete episode of mental devastation. In America at least, Johnston became a curiosity piece, and what was worse, being that he's intelligent as they come, he knew it -- which further fractured an already fragile person. But the truth of the matter is, Johnston is an authentic artist, not just an outsider. His songs accurately reflect who he is at any given moment. It seems that the Germans and other Europeans at large have always understood this, in the same way they understood Townes Van Zandt -- you'd never see anybody in Europe offer Van Zandt a drink, for instance. This show from 1999 in Germany reveals the depth of Johnston's talent, the dimension of his fragile mental state, and the total commitment of the German people to his art. With his father by his side, Johnston plays piano and guitar for over an hour, digging deep into his catalog (which features almost 400 songs) with a manic and tender energy that only Jonathan Richman is capable of, and just knocks 'em ...
| | Dave Melillo Talk Is Cheap CD (2006) Extended Play
Albertine CD music
$6.49 Seventeen-year-old singer/songwriter Dave Melillo will make you wish you were in high school -- or at least at an age where summers are still carefree days of wasting time with friends and navigating through butterflies-in-the-stomach relationships. His earnest Drive-Thru debut, Talk Is Cheap, is an acoustic and piano-tinged homage to restless youth that is ready for the embracement of his pop-punk brethren -- and not just the ones going through excruciating break-ups. It's hardly a shock that Jamie Wisner, the man behind the controls for Dashboard Confessional's first albums, produced the EP. His skill is perfect for the job, as Melillo's music is based in the same school of heartfelt rock that can simultaneously burst with bright passion on one track and strip back down to an emoting voice and six-strings on the next. As is the case, the EP sounds ...

| | Bola Shapes CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Albertine songs
$15.15 Not a new album as such, Shapes is actually the re-release of three 12" singles from just after the time of Bola's debut, Soup, in the late '90s. That makes Shapes a bit of a long-distance equivalent to, say, Aphex Twin's Chosen Lords, but regardless of provenance what's striking about the disc is how well it works throughout -- in an era when IDM now seems almost totally played out on many fronts, Shapes actually has some heft and impact to it. Credit perhaps to the limitations of the original release and its format, designed for dancing as much as contemplation. The elegant opening cut, untitled like the rest of the songs, is a classic slow burn and build of a song, dark, almost industrial basslines providing the anchor for an increasingly hyperactive but never flat-out chaotic percussion montage, finally breaking into a sweetly serene concluding keyboard part. From there the original six tracks take their own individual but generally related turns, each suggesting uncannily what a jumbled-up cityscape from ...
| | In Person/The Hi-Fi Sounds Of Harry James CDs (2007)
Albertine album
$17.19 First with Benny Goodman and then as leader of his own orchestra, Harry James was one of the most popular trumpeters and bandleaders of the Swing Era. Coming out of semi-retirement in the 1950s, James recorded four albums for Capitol Records: ONE NIGHT STAND, IN HI-FI, MORE HARRY JAMES IN HI-FI, and JAZZ SESSION, and the two-disc SOUNDS OF collects all four in one nicely annotated, digitally remastered package. With these albums, James both revisited his jazz roots and to varying degrees embraced a slightly more modern big band approach. Special guests include singer Helen Forrest (who sang with James in his heyday) ...
