Errol Flynn is a wiser, warmer, wittier version of his earlier characters as he rescues the Spanish queen (Viveca Lindfors) from the snares of an evil duke. Oscar-winning costumes and superb sets (including a knockout grand staircase) create a lavish atmosphere for dalliances with married beauties, narrow dungeon escapes and duels aplenty. Flynnn seems to be winking at his own off-screen image in the role he was born to play. As the legendary lover, he returns to Spain and takes the post of fencing instructor at the royal academy. There he becomes involved in court intrigue when he hears of a plot against the Queen.

The film climaxes in an all-out duel between Don Juan and the evil Prime Minister. Flynn seems to be winking at his own off-screen image in the role he was born to play. He becomes involved in court intrigue and swordplay when he hears of a plot against his adoring Queen. The laserdisc includes the original theatrical trailer. Errol Flynn's last swashbuckler, and doubles had to be used for both Flynn and Robert Douglas (who plays the Prime Minister) in the action-packed final duel.
